Arrest Made in the Steven L. Sawyer Homicide Case
On December 31, 2014, shortly after 6:00 am, officers responded to 9200 block of W. 83rd
Terrace on a reported shooting. When officers arrived, they found the resident, Mr. Steven L.
Sawyer, 49 years of age, had been shot to death in the street in front of his residence. A suspect,
DeMario D. Thompson (B/M 1/31/96), was later developed in the case.
A warrant was issued for Thompson for the murder of Mr. Sawyer. Special Deputized OPPD
officers along with the assistance of the U.S. Marshalls Kansas Fugitive Apprehension Task Force
and the U.S. Marshalls in KCMO, located and arrested Thompson in south Kansas City,
Missouri.
Mr. Thompson is being held on a Johnson County warrant for First Degree Murder with a
bond of $1,000,000
This case is still under investigation and no further information will be released tonight.
