Last week you may have been

surprised to be on PLUS schedule
again! That was because your
teachers were spending time at
Sunnyside High School observing
classes and collaborating with administration and teachers.
They walked through classrooms to see what teachers expect of their students at
the high school level, so
they are better able to
ensure that KCMS students reach their full
potential. Heres what
a few of the teachers
had to say about the
experience...

By Chassidy S.
It was great to see past
students. I loved all the familiar
faces. -Ashlee Chiarito (7th
Grade History)
It was a positive experience.
SHS teachers have high expectations like our teachers here at
KC. - Amy Ellis (7th ELA)

It was great to see how our

students are learning when they
get to high school. Also, being
able to speak with teachers and
ask questions helped affirm what
we are doing well and how we can
better prepare our students for
learning in high school. -Aaron

A Wintery Concert!
Did you go to the
Winter Concert on
December 17th?! It
was a blast! Amazing
music was played and
beautiful songs were
sung.
The performers
were Choir, Orchestra,
Band, Percussion, Drumline, and Color Guard.
Their hard work showed,
because they did an
amazing job! Performing
in front of an audience is
difficult, but they made it
look easy.

All week long

Deonte Hampton
was coming up to me
telling me how he
was going to block
my shot .Then during
the game, as I turned
to shoot, he was
waiting for me and
rejected my shot into
the bleachers, said
Mr.Wulf.

By Sheila V.

Songs that the choir sang

were We Wish You A Merry
Christmas, The First Noel, and
Deck The Halls. The Orchestra
played A Christmas Symphony,
Fantasy On Greensleeves and A
Celtic Christmas Fantasy. The
band played Jingles Bells, Jolly
Old St. Nick, Carol Of The Bells,
and Power Rock. The Drumline
performed the Middle School

the performers was that It

Students vs Teachers Basketball Game

Brandon C.
On December 18th, KC
teachers challenged the
basketball teams to a game.
The score was 88 to 62.
The game was fun to
watch. The students used a
different strategy of not
passing, driving, or really
playing any normal style of
basketball. Instead, they
just ran up the court and
shot a 3 pointer, sometimes from 6 feet behind

the 3-point line! And to

the teachers surprise,
many of the students
shots were going in allowing them to actually have
the lead after the 1st
quarter. Fortunately for
the teachers, their superior intellect, size, and skill
allowed them to take
control of the game and
dominate the students for
another easy victory. It

was a fun time for everyone and we look forward to a re-match next year.

A Barnes and Noble Adventure

By: Brenda J and Benji P
Several students went to
Barnes and Noble in December
to share the great things were
doing at KCMS.
A few groups who
went were Mrs. Gonzalezs Folklorico
class, Mr. Salehis
music department,
Mr. Siechert with his
3D printer, and a few
students from Mrs.
Ogdens AVID class.

The band students performed

Christmas songs first. The second group sang songs called
Christmas Tiffany, Deck the Halls
and many more. They all did a
fantastic job!
The Folklorico dancers
danced Jarabe Tapatio wearing
Adelita dresses, then Los Viejitos from Michuacan, and then
Bailando from La Gente de la
Zona. A sweet surprise that all
of the participants received was
a refreshing drink from the caf.
Everyone had a great night!

New Year Resolutions

by Sophia M. & Rhiana A.
Here comes the New Year
And its time to make resolutions
For I promise to be sincere
And bring in me a revolution
In class I'll talk less
In studies I'll surely progress
All my lies I'll confess
I'll go to play with egress

These are my resolutions

To bring in me an evolution
To follow them I'll try my best
Until then I'll not rest.

Green Time!
Did you know Mr. Green
has been teaching as a sub
for the past few years? He
has also been part of FAMOUS for 1 and a half years,
just kidding 7 years! Its all
been really fun for him. Some
people feel nervous about
meeting Mr. Green. Just like
you guys, Mr. Green was very
nervous on his first day of
teaching because it was like
he was in a different atmosphere.
Mr. Green continues teaching because he finds it rewarding. He likes the feeling
of students succeeding and
moving on to great things.
The kids are what he likes
most about his job. You know
why? Its because even when
hes having a bad day, you
kids always find a way to
cheer him up. He thanks the
entire staff for making him
feel at home.
If you are a student who
works hard and knows how
to have fun at the right moment, youre going to get
along with Mr. Green!

By Miranda X.

In Mr. Greens free time, he

works out 4 or 5 times per
week. That keeps him in
shape and eliminates stress.
Oh yay, he also likes to have
some family time and watch
sports. A funny thing is when
Mr. Green was younger, he
was a skinny little thing.
Whenever he sees buff guys,
he would tell his wife, I
would never wear a tight
shirt like that! Now that hes
older, hes now Mr. Tight
Shirt! Mr. Green sees himself
completing his master program in the next 5 years.

2nd Quarters
Character Counts Luncheon!
by Jackie C.
Congratulations to second quarters exemplar students. Their
teachers selected them as students who demonstrate model
behavior on campus. As a reward, they were asked to choose a
teacher to eat lunch and invite their parents to celebrate their
achievements. Everyone had a great time! Here are just a few
pictures from the event.

GIRLS WHO CODE

by Desiree R. and Alyssa F.

Girls Who Code is a
club at KCMS and they do
lots of cool things like they
make codes on the computers. Students learn how to
make animation and games.
Girls Who Code is a new
elective in its first year ever!
It is only on Thursday in the
computer lab after school.

Mrs. Ellis says, Girls Who

Code is a club that teaches girls
to write computer code. Girls
work on the computer programs to design different things
like video games, video games,
and phone apps, etc. We are
so glad to have this club at our
school this year!

Mrs. Reinhardt, Mrs.

Ellis and Mr. Ruiz are the
ones that are teaching Girls
Who Code. 7th grader Betsua Andrade said, Coding is
like a puzzle that you have to
solve.

The Hour of Code

The Hour of Code was a
simple and fun way of teaching
kids and also many adults about
coding.
Coding may sound complicated, but when you start to
practice and get the hang of
coding, it gets pretty easy!
Coding is very similar to puzzles by using equations and
variables like X and Y.
The Hour of Code was
worldwide. KMCS participated

in the event December 8-14th.

One of the websites that include the learning of coding is
www.code.org/learn. This website has games that are like
tutorials and most have around
20 levels. If you finished all the
levels, you earned a certificate.
When participating in the
Hour of Code, if you were
done with the simple tutorials
like Flappy Bird, Angry Birds,
and Anna and Elsa, you could
have done other things like

So Dramatic!
Have you heard of the
drama elective? This class is
taught by Mrs. Kruse in room
30 during 7th period. The
students learn drama techniques and improve their
public speaking.
Mrs. Navarro and Mrs. Kruse created this new elective
here at KC! In fact, this is its first year here at Kings Canyon.
The students of Drama hope to perform a play here at
KCMS at the end the of the school year.
Kiara Alcaraz, an eighth grader in the elective said,
Drama has been an aspiration of mine since elementary. Its
a great way of calming myself or cheering myself up when

drawing /coloring with coding.

You could have even made
stories of your own! The students had a great time during
the event and learned a lot!

needed. The Drama Club seems to be fun and

inspiring!
Naomi Ramos is
also in Drama. She
says Drama is a
blast! Next year I
plan to join Drama in
high school. We
wish you the best,
Naomi, and know
you will do great!
Hopefully next year

KCMS Soccer
by Isaiah E. and Raul M.

The boys soccer team went

to their eighth straight postseason. Unfortunately, they lost a
close game in the semifinals by a
score of 2 to 1. Overall for the
season, the boys soccer team
won 6 games and lost 2 games.
Mr. Enriquez the coach said,
We had a total of 28 boys on
the team and it would have been
impossible without the help of my
team managers Fernanda Valdovinos De Dios and Jasmine
Pacheco. Without them, this
would have been more difficult to
manage.
Once again, were proud of
our KCMS soccer team! Go
Grizzlies!

It was an amazing year with the

girls soccer team this year. They
played hard and worked together.
They made great strides and improved in skill, team work, and
game play every game.
Coach Avedikian said, The girls
came together and finished playing
highly competitive soccer. The
captains Breanna Jones, Alazay
Esparza, Yasmin Martinez, and
Rayann Uribe showed leadership
and encouraged the team to play
their hardest each and every game.

KCMS Wrestling by Liliana Guzman

We work hard, train hard, and wrestle even harder,

we put our bodies to the test when we wrestle.
-Sergio Ochoa

Hey KCMS Grizzlies, have you

ever considered or tried wrestling? Most people have thought of
wrestling not as a sport ,but it is.
Wrestling takes a lot of hard work
and you have to be in great condition. It takes commitment and you
have to test your strength for
competition. One thing you must
always be during a match is focused because at any time you can
be picked up, slammed, or even
flipped!

JV and Varsity Boys Basketball Grizzlies

The Varsity and JV boys basketball team did
well this season. We are all happy for them! The
varsity team finished the season 6-2 and the season ended with a loss to Sequoia in the playoffs.

Giovanni Alcana
from JV basketball
said, Basketball is
fun. I think this might
be my second favorite sport. My friends
and I enjoy this sport
so much. Who else
doesnt like basketball?

This years wrestlers have worked

so hard and have done such a great
job that they made it to the Fresno
City Championship Tournament
where Joseph Vang and Joseph Chacon both placed 2nd with several other team members placing in 3rd-6th
places from KCMS as well! The
coach, Mr. Meza even said We enjoyed another good season with young
talent set to return next year.
Our overall team record was 5-5
and our league record was 4-3.

by Valeria S.
Overall it was a great season. Thanks to the varsity
and JV for coaches for their
leadership, leading them to
so many wins!
We are all proud of all
of you basketball boys!

Mr. Esajan, Varsity

coach, said We had a
successful season with
more ups than downs.
It was a fun team to
coach and Im excited
to see this group of 8th
graders continue to
develop as players in
high school.
