Statement by Everglades Foundation Director of Science & Policy

Dr. Thomas Van Lent on Continued Releases from Lake Okeechobee
Palmetto Bay, Fla. The Everglades Foundation today released the following statement,
attributable to Director of Science & Policy Dr. Thomas Van Lent, Ph.D., regarding todays
announcement by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that Lake Okeechobee discharges to the
Caloosahatchee and St. Lucie River estuaries will be increased by 200 cubic feet per second
(cfs).
Todays event is just further proof that we need to buy land in the Everglades Agricultural Area
(EAA) and build a permanent storage solution. If a reservoir were in place today, these
precautionary dry-season releases would not be happening.
We continue to urge the State of Florida to take advantage of a significant opportunity it has
before it, and buy a strategic parcel of land a 26,100 acre area just south of Lake Okeechobee
and build this badly-needed water storage reservoir. This investment in our states future will not
only benefit the Everglades, but also help reduce these harmful discharges from Lake
Okeechobee; and, in turn, prevent any further damage to our local economies and ecosystems, as
well as protect the water supply for nearly eight million people.
