Early history of French-occupied Vietnam

As a colonized nation, Viet Nam's natural resources were


exploited, its people were treated with disdain and
impoverished, and its leaders were rendered powerless. Also,
there were poor economic conditions; peasants struggled under
heavy taxes and high rent, and workers in factories, in coal
mines, and on rubber plantations laboured in abysmal
conditions for low wages.

Ho Chi Minh
Following World War 1, he petitioned for recognition of the civil
rights of the Vietnamese people in French Indochina to the
Western powers at the Versailles peace talks, but was ignored.
Ho Chi Minh also petitioned to the United States president
Woodrow Wilson to have the French removed from Vietnam,
and to replace it with a new nationalist government. However,
he was ignored too.
In 1941, Ho Chi Minh returned to Vietnam to lead the Vit Minh
independence movement. The "men in black" were a 10,000
member guerrilla force that operated with the Viet Minh. He
oversaw many successful military actions against the Vichy
French and Japanese occupation of Vietnam during World War II,
supported closely but clandestinely by the United States Office
of Strategic Services, and also later against the French bid to
reoccupy the country (19461954).
In 1954, after the Vietnamese defeated the French during the
French- Indochina war, which was led by Ho chi Minh and his
Communist party, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was
established.
