Dear Hiring Committee of The Liahona and The Ensign,

Thank you for your interest in me as a potential intern for Church Magazines. I am applying for these
internships in order to learn the process of editing from professionals. I am qualified because of my
writing, editing, and language courses as well as my editing work and volunteer experiences.

Education
You will note on my rsum that I have taken many writing and editing courses for general credits and for
my editing minor. I have taken six French classes, including Advanced French writing (I also served in all
Spanish areas on my full-time mission, though I have not yet taken Spanish classes). I received all As in
these courses, and my overall GPA is 3.99.
I have learned diligence and organization by working hard in my education. These skills will help me as I
fulfill writing and editing assignments at Church Magazines. My language skills in French and Spanish
will allow me translate articles for The Liahona.

Work

You will also see on my rsum that I have worked as a tutor and a Writing Fellow for five semesters,
working with English as a Second Language (ESL) students and native English-speaking students. I
coached students on revising their research papers; first, I read the papers and gave written feedback, and
then we met for conferences to discuss the paper. We focused on the students thesis, organization,
supporting evidence, grammar, and punctuation.
Through these work experiences, I have become proficient at helping authors improve their own writing.
This skill will be useful as I communicate with authors at Church Magazines.

Volunteering

Also on my rsum you will see that I volunteered on the editing staffs of four student publications at
BYU. As a current senior editor for Schwa: Linguistics and Language, I input comments from other editors
on the staff into the documents, and later I will help design the pages in InDesign. As a current staff editor
for Womens Studies Journal, I am in the stages of copyediting an award-winning article as well as recruiting
other editors and soliciting submissions for the next issue.
These volunteer opportunities have prepared me to work on all stages of the editing process at Church
Magazines.

Writing
You will read in my writing samples that I wrote an article as an example of one that could be published in
The Liahona. I also included a published article and a paper I presented at a symposium.

Editing
As you look over my editing samples, you will notice that I edited peers articles for classes and
applications as well as articles that would be published in student journals.
Thank you for reviewing my portfolio. I look forward to hearing from you within the next month.
Sincerely,
Leah Davis
