Canon IV is from Fantasies,Intermezzi and CanonicEtudeson the name
EuDiCE SHApirofor Solo Violin (1985) by Ellis B. Kohs. The notes E, D,
C, E, S (Eb), H (B), and A, when rearranged, form a six-note scale, AB-C-D-DO-E.
There are two notes that serve as pivots for use in inversion: E and C.
Thus, the descending progression E-D-C when inverted becomes the
ascending E-B-C.
The neighboring-tone idea in measure 12 (E-DO-E) is E-A-E when
inverted (see measure 1) because the upper neighbor of E must be A-it
cannot be F without violating the given scale-form.
Octave displacement is used when needed to accommodate the limitations imposed by the instrument. Part II is the retrogradeinversion of Part
I. The noncanonic Coda is a terminal horsd'oeuvre.
