A report in Cultural Anthropology

Brief history about MARRIAGE & FAMILY

Families as vital institutions. They perform vital functions for their


members and to their society.

Families as social institutions:

Socially created, defined and vary across culture

Families as institutions:

They embody a set of interrelated roles and responsibilities

Cross-cultural differences, the changing nature of families, and


political forces often have made defining the family a matter of some
contention.

By 20th century, social scientists had developed definitions of the


family that seemed broadly inclusive in terms of capturing the
essence of family life across cultures.

For an example; a family scholar defines family based on its structure,


functions and attributes.

However, for some, family is contrary to what scholars point out.

What is Marriage?

"Marriage is primarily a social and economic arrangement between two


families

A groups approved mating arrangements, usually marked by a ritual of some


sort (the wedding) to indicate the couples new public status.

Concept of Marriage

Marriages varies in different culture and it does evolve culturally.

However, marriage is commonly define as the union of a woman and a


man.

But, whatever the concept of marriage, like family, it is a social


institution in which it benefits the couple and the society.

It involves economic considerations.

For an example, in Muslim, children enters arrange marriage for the sake of
there family business.

Types of marriage partnership

Monogamy (aka: One-spouse system)

Marriage of a man and a woman

Serial monogamy A marriage form in which a man or a woman


marries or lives with a series of partners in succession.

Polygamy (aka: Multiple spouse system)

Marriage between a man and many women or vice versa

Types:

Polygyny a man marries many women

Polyandry - a woman marries many men
