LESSON PLAN OUTLINE

JMU Elementary Education Program
A. TITLE/TYPE OF LESSON Native Americans foldable/ Students will create a
foldable to help them study for their test on Native Americans.
B. CONTEXT OF LESSON
Prior to this lesson, I have been teaching my students about Native Americans. We have
completed taking notes on all of the different Native American tribes. I have also taught
them about archaeology and how we have used artifacts to help us learn more about
Native Americans. Students will continue learning information about this topic
throughout the week. They will have a test on this information next week, so they should
use this foldable to help them study.
C. LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Understand
Students will know
information about each
tribe.

Know
Students will know which
description describes each
tribe.

Students will understand

that they can use their
foldable to help them study
for their test.

Students will know that

different tribes had different
characteristics due to their
different locations.

Do
Students will make a
foldable correctly.
Descriptions will be
matched to appropriate
tribes.
Students will use their
foldable to help them with
other assignments and study
for their test.

D. ASSESSING LEARNING
Since we are doing this activity as an entire class, students should be able to follow along
and make their foldable correctly. I will sporadically go around the room to make sure
that everyone is following along as I teach. If a student needs help I will assist them.
Throughout the rest of the week I will encourage students to use this to help them with
other work a resource. This will also help them study at home in a more creative way
than just reading their notes.

(Inuit), Northwest (Kwakiutl), Plains (Lakota), Southwest (Pueblo), and
Eastern Woodlands (Iroquois);
c) describing how the American Indians used the resources in their
environment.
F. MATERIALS NEEDED
- Foldable papers
- Construction paper
- Scissors
- Glue
- Pencil
Construction paper, scissors, glue, and pencils are all in the classroom. I will provide the
foldable papers during this lesson.
G. PROCEDURE

Preparation of the learning environment

I will make up a foldable worksheet prior to teaching this lesson.
Engage- Introduction of the lesson
I will show students a Brain Pop video at the beginning of this lesson that
will spark their attention. It will also review material that we have
been
learning in prior Social Studies classes.
Implementation of the lesson
After the video, I will pass out foldable papers and explain that we will
match descriptions to the appropriate tribes. This will be used as a
study
tool for their test. By having the information visually appealing,
students
will have an easier time studying the different Native
American tribes than
just reading their notes. This will be done as a class so the
students know
that they chose the correct descriptions and wont
be studying the wrong
information.
Closure
I will ask students to put their foldable in their Social Studies folders so
they will have them to study later on. I will also give them the date
of their
test to write down in their agendas so they can start thinking about
studying.
Clean-up
I will make sure that all glue sticks and scissors are put away. We will also
put scraps of paper in the recycling bin.
H. DIFFERENTIATION
This lesson is appropriate for all types of learners. Even if students have trouble learning
this information, they will now have it in an organized fashion to help them learn it more
thoroughly. They will still have their notes to refer back to, but I believe that this type of
graphic organization will promote learning this material in an easier way for all learners.

I. WHAT COULD GO WRONG WITH THIS LESSON AND WHAT WILL YOU
DO ABOUT IT?
Since these students have made foldables before, I do not think that they will have a very
difficult time constructing one. The biggest problem that I see happening is that students
will not know which information describes each tribe. We have been studying this
information previously, but last week was a little unorganized with Social Studies. They
took a test and also had a day off from Social Studies because of Mrs. Burns. I believe
that they will learn this material with few problems, but they did not have a great
foundation to learning this material last week. This week will be much more progressive
and consistent. I will help the students as much as I can without giving the answers away
for supportive instruction to help them learn better.
