Rules of the Game: Put your name at the top of this page. Maximum
credits for each question are shown in the table above. Answers that do
not provide sufficient detail as to how you arrived at them will
receive partial credit only.
1. The radial miss-distance of landings from parachuting sky divers, as
measured from a targets center, is a Raleigh random variable with
distribution function
(

FX (x) =

1 ex
0

2 /800

x0
x<0

The target is a circle of 50 m radius with a bulls eye of 10 m radius. A

parachuter is an expert if she hits the bulls eye. If he falls outside the
bulls eye but within a circle of 25 m radius, he is called qualified.
Given that a parachuter is not an expert but hits the target, what is
the probability of being qualified?

2. Explain briefly why you agree or disagree with the following statements:
(a) Uncorrelated random variables X and Y are often also independent.

(b) If the random variable Z is the sum of two random variables X

and Y , and Y and Z have a Gaussian density function, then X
must also be Gaussian.

(c) If the random variable Z is the Fourier Transform of the Gaussian

variable X, then fZ (z) is Gaussian too.

3. Two independent random variables x and y have density functions given

by
fX (x) = 0.5 [u(x + 1) u(x 1)],
fY (y) = a(2 y) [u(y 1) u(y 2)],
with

u(t) =

1 t0
0 t<0

A new variable Z = X 2Y is formed.

(a) Determine the value of a such that fY (y) is a proper density function.

(b) Determine E{z}.

(c) Determine the variance of z.

(d) Determine the density function fZ (z).

(e) Compute the probability that 2.5 z 2.0.
