We Gather to Praise God

Welcome to our worship service today.
We pray you will feel God's presence as we worship together.
If you are able, please stand where indicated with an asterisk(*).
You are invited to join in reading the responses and prayers, printed in bold.

Prelude
Greeting and Welcome
Life and Work of the Church
Lighting the Christ Candle
*Sung Introit: In the Bulb, There is a Flower

VU703

In the bulb there is a flower, in the seed, an apple tree,

in cocoons, a hidden promise: butterflies will soon be free!
In the cold and snow of winter theres a spring that waits to be,
unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see.

*Passing of the Peace

*The Call to Worship:
If you think that you are standing fast in faith and
faithfulness, watch that you do not fall. No testing has
overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is
faithful and will not let us be tested beyond our strength,
but with the testing, God will also provide the way out
so that we may be able to endure it.
Let's worship God and pray to be made courageous and
strong, that we may be able to resist the tempter of our
souls.

*The Opening Prayer:

O God, with the praise we offer to you in our worship this
day, we express our gratitude for being among your called
and chosen. We come together in answer to your call,
believing that we may be built up in spirit, mind and heart,
and equipped for joyful service. We would be your faithful
disciples. We would listen for your voice alone, and follow
where you lead. Enable us to receive the blessing of your
strength, that we may be true to our vocation. We offer
Christ's prayer:
Our Father, who art in heaven...

We Respond to Gods Word

Offering Invitation
*Response: Your Work O God Needs Many Hands
VU537

Your work, O God, needs many hands to help you

everywhere, and some there are who cannot serve unless our
gifts we share.
Because we love you and your work, our offering now we
make; be pleased to use it as your own, we ask for Jesus
sake.

*The Prayer of Dedication:

These gifts are offered today, that they may flood and flow
into your world bearing your good news of justice and
compassion to all. AMEN!
Prayers of the People
*Hymn:

We Praise You, O God

VU 218

*Commissioning & Blessing

*Sung Blessing: Go Now in Peace
Go now in peace, never be afraid,
God will go with you each hour of everyday.
Go now in faith, steadfast, strong and true.
Know he will guide you in all you do.
Go now in love and show you believe,
Reach out to others so all the world can see.
God will be there watching from above,
Go now in peace, in faith and in love.

Haida Language Renewal

The small town of Skidegate, British Columbia, sits on the
stunning coast of Haida Gwaii. In the 19th century, Methodist
missionaries arrived and eventually set up a church and mission
house here as well as schools and hospitals.
Over the generations the Haida people lost much of their culture
and language, but there is a renewed interest in having children
learn their traditional language. The United Church is supporting
that through a Mission and Service grant to help fund the creation
of DVDs for children in the Haida language. The oldest speaker in
the community is in her 90s, and shes already teaching the
children, says the Rev. Nancy OHiggins, Skidegate United
Churchs minister.
The small church also receives Mission and Service support so it
can maintain its presence in the community. Nancy conducts most
of the baptisms, weddings, and funerals for the community. The
church is also an important centre during the week: groups use it
to hold meetings, the community choir practises there, and there
are yoga and heritage programs as well.
Were conscious that we receive Mission and Support money, so
we feel its important to give back to Mission and Service. Its
always part of our Sunday worship because we know that without
it we couldnt be a presence in the community, Nancy says.
The ability to make DVDs of people speaking the Haida language
means the language will be preserved for generations to come,
allowing new generations to retain their heritage for years to
come. This is thanks to our gifts for Mission and Service, which
support a small church on the west coast of Canada.
Mighty and tender God, our gifts to M&S help your church to
do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with you.
