Design Principles Reflection

Jacob RasmussenThe First design principle is the Primacy of SelfDiscovery. To me it means to understand and to gather
information on your own through your own efforts not just
given. The second is the having of wonderful ideas which I
believe means to share your input and to have your own
original ideas. The third principle of design is the
responsibility for learning which means that your education
is your responsibility not anyone elses .The fourth design
principle is empathy and caring which to me means that
when a peer is uncomfortable or is having troubles in or out
of school that it is just right to help them through their
difficulties. Lastly the fifth is Success and failure which I feel
means to not accept failure, but to learn from previous
mistakes and apply what you have learned to succeed.
The sixth design principle is Collaboration and
Competition, which to me means that it is important to learn
as a group is just as important as learning individually. The
seventh principle of design Diversity and Inclusion means to
get along and to not discriminate on looks or outside
appearances. The eighth is the Natural World to me means
that a connection to nature is important in a learning and
understanding environment. The ninth is solitude and
reflection which means that it is important to focus and
discover individually to achieve a deep personal
understanding. Finally, the principle Service and Compassion
to my understanding is that we are a team and that
teamwork is extremely important to function as a successful
learning environment.
Last year at my school I saw in action principle three
where my learning was my problem and that my success
was completely dependent on myself. This year I have
already seen principles eight and ten with our teambuilding

and connection to nature around us in our fieldwork so far. I

have only been at harborside for two weeks but I am
interested in seeing all of the principles in action. From what
I have heard about intensives it seems that principle five will
be an important ideal at harborside. I feel principle three is
very important but I feel with intensives that it is not that big
of a responsibility if you can make it up at the end of the
semester.
I believe the design principles nine and five fit me best.
I enjoy working alone and I feel that working individually is
where I strive best. I believe principle five are extremely
important, to get up after defeat just to try to succeed again.
I believe principle five fits me because I dont let failure get
in the way of my success. This year I hope to continue to be
comfortable in continuing in achieving these principles and
hope to succeed in all the principles.
