The tappet setting procedure and correct values are mentioned in the operating and maintenance manual of the
engine and will be demonstrated on the sit at the OJT training.

Valve Timing.
The efficient operating of an engine depends upon the correct timing of the opening and closing of the inlet and
exhaust valves.
If the valves tends to open not in proportion to he sequence of the piston movement, then the engine will either
not start or develop hunting, knocking and vibrating. Backpressure will be formed on the piston that may cause
damage to the connecting rod tending to bend or even damage the bearings and crankshaft.
Valve timing should be carried out in sequence to the engine timing to the correct specified values. The
procedure for the valve timing is explained in the manufacturers workshop manual with the required tolerances.

Valve overlap
It is the period when inlet and exhaust valves remain open together. This ensures good scavenging of the
combustion space and assists the initial start of the incoming charge. This also cools the valves.

Valve lag
It is the period when the valves are starting to open and then when they are fully open.
