RWD Dodge 4-Speeds

OD Direct Clutch Changes

Later model 4 speeds have more direct clutches in the overdrive section. More
clutches were mainly used on heavier applications such as diesels and V-10s, but
could be found in any applications.
The overdrive direct clutch stack can have as many as 10 friction and 9 steels.
When the 10 frictions/9 steels pack is used, thinner steels and a thinner top plate is
required. Dimensions are listed below.
New Thin Steels (Approx. .053" Thick). .Chrysler Part # 4864053
New Thinner Top Plate (.085 Thick Lug)......Chrysler Part # 4461183
NOTE: This bulletin applies to models that use conventional friction and steel plates,
not later types that use single sided friction discs.

Plate.

The top plate is thinner at the lug area to

provide room for more plates.
Measure the thickness of the lug of the plate to
determine which plate is required.
Common Type - Approximately .210" thick lug.
10 clutch Type - Approximately .085" thick lug.

The steels used with the 10

friction pack are thinner (.053")
than previous designs. Use of
thinner steels and top plate
allows more room for additional
frictions. The friction plate
thickness is the same as
previous designs.
