A pressure relief valve protects systems from overpressure and underpressure by opening to release or admit a predetermined amount of fluid once pressure exceeds design limits, then reclosing once normal pressure returns. A pressure safety valve, intended for compressible fluids, opens rapidly while a pressure relief valve for incompressible fluids opens gradually in response to pressure changes. Common types of pressure relief and safety valves include conventional valves affected by backpressure, and balanced valves that minimize backpressure effects on operating characteristics like opening pressure and relieving capacity.

A pressure relief valve is a safety device to protect a system from over and underpressure conditions, actuated by inlet static pressure to prevent the change in pressure in excess of design value, and reclose after the normal operating conditions are restored. In over pressure conditions a predetermined amount of fluid is taken out of the system and for under pressure protection (normally vacuum) a predetermined amount of fluid is entered into the system. The difference between Pressure relief valve and Pressure safety valve is that former is used normally for incompressible service characterized by gradual change in opening with change in pressure, and latter is used normally for compressible fluid service characterized by rapid opening/ pop-up action. The mentioned argument is based upon API RP 520. Following are the basic types of Pressure Safety/Relive Vavles 1- Conventional Pressure Relief Valve : A spring-loaded pressure relief valve whose operational Characteristics are directly affected by change in back-pressure. 2- Balanced Pressure Relief Valve: A spring loaded pressure relief valve which incorporates different ways to minimize the effect of back-pressure on valve operating characteristics.( Opening Pressure, Closing Pressure and Relieving Capacity) 3-
