The birth of

the alphabet
as we know it

Last

lesson we looked at the importance


of the development of writing.
We also looked at different systems of
writing, some of which we can see in
writing systems today (chinese, greek)

Cuneiform,

hieroglpyhics and Chinese


characters all three could be used to
trascribe words or syllables.

single sound can represent several


different things depending on how it is
written.
Each character is formed of a key
= basic meaning
Phonetic element to show how to
pronounce it
=caligraphy contributes to meaning
colour of ink used, intensity of the stroke

Problem!

By 1200 BC various writing systems were being


used in India, China and Europe and Egypt.

There were 2 fundemental problems what


were they?

There was no common writing system which


allowed all 3 civilizations to communicate with
eachother.
Due to the complex nature of the scripts one
had to master a large number of signs and
charachters to be able to read and write.
