possiblelevelofsafetyintheeventofacollision.Thisgoodcrashbehaviorisachievedinparticularby
usingmaximumstrengthsteelsinthepillarandnodestructures.
Intheeventofhead-oncollisions,sidememberstructuresthatfoldinaspecificmannerensurethat
thecrashenergyisdissipatedasevenlyaspossible.Intheeventofahead-oncollisionwithminimal
overlap,speciallydesignedcrossmemberstructuresensurethattheactingforcesarealsotransferred
tothesideofthevehicleoppositetheimpact.
Partofdesigningthesestructuralfeatureswastooptimallycoordinatetherestraintsystemwiththe
vehicle.Inadditiontofrontairbagsforthedriverandfrontpassenger,theBMWX1isequippedwitha
deformablesteeringcolumnandbelttensionerswithforcelimiters.
Thereisonlyaveryshortcrumplezoneforsidecollisions.Toachievealowoccupantload,particularattentionmustbepaidtothelowestpossiblepenetrationdepth.Amajorcontributiontothisis
madebytheB-pillardesignedfrommaximumstrengthsheetmetalincombinationwiththedoorsthat
featureimpactmemberswhicheffectivelyreducepenetrationofthedoorsintotheinterior.Theside
structureisachievedbyoptimallydistributingtheactingforcestothevariousloadpathssuchasthe
A-pillarortheinstrumentpanelcrossmember.
Thereardeformationareaisformedbytwosupportprofilesrunninglongitudinally,theluggagecompartmentfloor,thereartrimpanel,therearsidepanelsintegratedintothesideframeandvariousreinforcements.

Thefrontendmeetsthehighrequirementsforpedestrianprotectionbyprovidingcorrespondingdeformationspacesundertheenginecompartmentlidaswellasyieldinghingekinematics.
Therearbumpercomesstandardwithattachmentpointsfortwotowinglugsorthefixtureforabicycle
carrieravailableasanaccessory.
Thedifferencebetweenthefrontandrearbumpersaswellasthesilltriminthebasicversionandthe
X-linepackageisthepaintedindividualparts.Theindividualpartintherearbumperislargerthanin
thebasicversion,andtwopaintedindividualpartsareaddedinthesilltrim.Theindividualpartsused
inthebumpersofthebasicversionarenotpaintedbutaremadefromsilver-colormaterial.
