documents when you apply for a
residence permit

When you turn up to your appointment with the police or embassy/consulate you must hand
in copies of the documents on this list. You must also present the original documents.
If any of your documents are in a different language than Norwegian or English, you must
hand in a translation of the documents into Norwegian or English.

Documentation when you apply for the first time


passport and copy of passport
a signed cover letter from the Application Portal or an application form
a passport photo
documentation that you have paid the application fee
documentation which shows that you have somewhere to live in Norway, for example a
rental contract
documentation of admission to a Norwegian course, or, as a minimum, be able to
document a Norwegian course that you are going to attend. There are no requirements to
the level of the Norwegian language course, but the tuition must, as a rule, take place at
an established educational institution or course provider
documentation of your education or craft certificate containing information about the
duration of the education, its content and the level of the educational institution
and/or
documentation of any work experience containing detailed information from former
employers about the duration and tasks

Work experience has to be documented only when it shall be a part of the assessment of whether
the applicant is a skilled worker or not.
a plan for the Norwegian courses you will be attending during your stay in Norway
documentation of funds corresponding to the amount of full support from the Norwegian

State Education Loan Fund. This can for example be student loans, grants or
documentation of own funds in your account
power of attorney form (if you want to a representative to talk with the UDI on your behalf)
a signed version of this list

Additional requirements for some applications


If you submit your application in a country other than your home country
Documentation that you have held a residence permit for the last six months in this
country

Documentation when you apply for a renewal


Please note that this permit can only be given for a total of one year
passport
a signed cover letter from the Application Portal or an application form
documentation that you have paid the application fee
documentation of admission to a Norwegian course, or, as a minimum, be able to
document a Norwegian course that you are going to attend. There are no requirements to
the level of the Norwegian language course, but the tuition must, as a rule, take place at
an established educational institution or course provider
documentation of financial maintenance for the whole period covered by the permit
(subsistence) by means of documentation of support from the Norwegian State
Educational Loan Fund, a bank statement from your account or a specified work contract
for part time work
