Over the ages, musicians have utilized various instruments in many ways to express

themselves. Jazz musicians use wind instruments, drum, and piano, Rock musicians
use guitar, drum, and bass, Classical musicians use a combination of string, brass, and
woodwind instruments, and plunder phonic musicians use.wellMUSIC as their
primary instrument of choice. In other words, plunder phonic musicians use recordings
of existing music that, when cut, modified, and juxtaposed properly, creates something
brand new. The technical term for this process is known as sampling.

Jeesh created several remixes of the works of Renowned animator Haiyao Miyazaki
from Studio Ghibli in Japan
Jeesh went on to file a counter claim against the studio - stating why he believed the
remix should be restored.
His efforts were only half-successful. His video for 'Pilot's Daydream', his Porco Rosso
remix, was restored. However, Pure Etherium and Sheeta, both remixes for Castle In
The Sky, are still missing today.

In United States copyright law, fair use is defined as "a doctrine that permits
limited use of copyrighted material without acquiring permission from the rights
holders." Whether something is deemed to be fair use or not depends on four
factors:
1. The purpose and character of the use of the copyrighted material.
2. The nature of the copyrighted work
3. The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted
work as a whole; and
4. the effect of the use upon the potential market or value of the copyrighted
work.
In the case of Jeesh, he was only trying to pay tribute to the work of the studio,
he only used small samples from the original work, he wasn't making money from
his use of the studio's works, and he wasn't hurting the market value of the
original works. If anything, he was helping to draw attention to the original works.

Under these conditions, Jeesh's remixes should be available for the public to see,
however, since the Fair Use Doctrine is a US Doctrine, and Studio Ghibli is a
Japanese studio, the jurisdiction of the doctrine is up for debate.
Indeed, plunder phonics is having a significant impact on the future of music, and
it is something that should be embraced, rather that suppressed.
This has been 'The Art of Plunderphonics', produced by Jack Meloche.
A very special thanks to Patrick Suseoff and Joshua Kershaw for their invaluable
contributions to this project, as well as their fantastic music.

Patrick Suseoff, also known by his stage name P.SUS, uses sampling to create
his music.
