Queen Elizabeth

Elizabeth I ruled England alone. She did not marry. So although she was
queen, England had no king. This was unusual at the time.
The Elizabethan Age was an exciting part of English history. There were
new ideas, and arguments about religion. There were wars with Spain.
English explorers sailed to new lands.
Elizabeth was Queen of England, Ireland and Wales from 1558 to 1603.
She gave her name to the 'Elizabethan Age'. It was an exciting time in
English history. This was the age of William Shakespeare's plays, Francis
Drake's voyages, and the sea battles against the Spanish Armada.
Queen Elizabeth I would sometimes wear a frog-shaped earring, given to
her as a gift from Francois, the Duke of Anjou. This was probably because
Elizabeth called Francois her "frog". Either political correctness didn't exist
in the 16th Century, or Elizabeth could get away with saying what she
wanted because she was Queen.
Elizabeth could understand several languages: English, Latin, Greek,
Italian, French, Spanish, Welsh and apparently even Cornish, a language
which is now only spoken by about 2,000 people in Cornwall.
Queen Elizabeth I has been portrayed more often in film and on television
than any other British monarch.
After her step mother Catherine Howards execution, Elizabeth reputedly
told her friend (and later favourite), Robert Dudley, I will never marry.
Although her father had her mother executed, Elizabeth was fond of him
and revered his memory.
Although Elizabeth was known as The Virgin Queen, scandal surrounded
her There were rumours over her close relationships with Robert Dudley
(the Earl of Leicester), Robert Devereux (the Earl of Essex), Sir Walter
Raleigh and Christopher Hatton.
It has been rumoured that Elizabeth I wrote some of William
Shakespeares plays! There is, in fact, no evidence of this.
Elizabeth Is motto was Semper Eadem, meaning Always the Same.

Elizabeths reign is known as The Golden Age
