Now add the 3 fish lengths together to find out how long all three of your fish are
together!
Fish 1 + Fish 2 + Fish 3 = ____________ (must show work!)

You are almost ready to eat! But first lets find out how well your team mates did.
Collect each of their TOTAL fish lengths
Team member 1: ____________

Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects to the nearest
whole unit, or by making repeated measurements of the same object. Show the
measurements by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in
whole-number units.

Now create a line plot in the space below to show your data.
The horizontal line will represent the number of laps
completed.

Based on your line plot answer the following questions:

1)

What was the most common number of laps your team

2)

was able to complete?________

Why do you think this happened?

Math National Parks Activity

CCSS.Math.Content.2.MD.B.5
Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve word problems involving lengths
that are given in the same units, e.g., by using drawings (such as drawings of rulers)
and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
CCSS.Math.Content.2.OA.A.1
Use addition and subtraction within 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems
involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and
comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations
with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.

The park needs your help!

Use your math skills to save the day!
1) A family of Elk was out wandering through the forest. The
Dad was first and he was 7 feet in length, then the mom
was second in line and she was 6 feet in length. Finally the
baby elk was last in line and was 3 feet in length. How long
was the Elk line? Draw a picture to help you solve!

2)

The elk line (that you drew above) decided to cross a

bridge, but the family wanted to make sure everyone
could fit on the bridge at the same time! If the bridge
was 12 feet in length would the whole family of elk be
able to stand on the bridge? Draw a picture to help you
solve!

What if the bridge was 18 feet in length? Would they

fit then? Draw a picture to help you solve!

3)

One day there was a family of Buffalo, the little boy in

the park decided to count them. If he counted 45
Buffalo that were standing by the watering hole and he
counted 37 Buffalo that were standing by the
mountain. How many Buffalo were there all together?
Show your work!

As the boy was watching all the Buffalo in the park he

noticed that a giant group of 33 decided to wander
away. Now how many are left?

4)

Now, I want you to create 2 word problems of your

own! The topic has to be about animals in the park. You
must including addition or subtraction (within 100).
After you create 2 word problems exchange them with
a teammate and see if they can solve them!
