COURSE
Kelsey has had a very productive first placement with Ms. Templeton in the grade 1/2 classroom at Linden
Lanes. Kelsey developed a positive rapport with students immediately. As she became familiar with the class,
Kelsey demonstrated a good sense for those students who needed extra attention and she was quick to assist
them. She was also able to comfortably assume responsibility for many of the regular routine activities in the
classroom day.
Kelsey has a good ear and eye for sensing what was taking place in the school and was able to fit her planning
into ways that aligned with those goals. She was able to link lesson activities with overall school goals and
calendar events like Halloween and Remembrance Day. She was very collegial in terms of communicating with
her cooperating teacher and other staff members to get ideas and was always quick to act on what she had
learned. In the math area, she created a Halloween glyph and planned the Halloween party which included four
centers where students participated in crafts, Halloween-themed bingo, snacks, and Tic-CAT-Toe. Students very
much enjoyed rotating through these stations to experience a variety of Halloween fun. She was also engaged in
developing bulletin boards and displays on seasonal and literacy themes. Kelsey also assisted the guidance
counsellor in the presentation of the Roots of Empathy program.
Her lesson plans were always well developed by using the template provided and included outcomes, essential
questions, assessments, and activating, acquiring, and applying strategies. She showed these plans to Ms.
Templeton ahead of time so that they could debug any potential problems. Kelsey was always open to
suggestions on how to adapt the plans in ways that would help the class go better.
Kelsey was able to feel safe and secure in taking risks and trying out new things as a beginning teacher.
Moreover, she was able to respond productively and optimistically when things did not work as planned. She was
very reflective about her teaching experiences and willing to retool the lesson and reteach in areas that she felt
did not meet her standards. Kelsey does not stop at good enough. She wants her students to meet and exceed
expectations, and she supports them in that pursuit.
Kelsey came to the placement knowing that classroom management was an area upon which she wanted to
focus in terms of her professional development and so she and Ms. Templeton were able to be in regular
communication on strategies to try out and debriefing the results of these experiments. Kelsey implemented
various developmentally appropriate strategies for classroom management. She showed a good anticipation of
potential issues and addressed them before they became issues. As soon as students began working on new

With continued reflection and opportunities to take risks, Kelsey will develop into a promising young teacher.
