Maya Angelou
1928-2014
Maya Angelou was an entertainer and mostly known for her writing. She was a dancer
in the early 50s and moved here and there constantly with her son for work and
college for him. She was married twice and both ended in quick divorces for her time.
Later on in the 60s she met heroes in Americas history such as Malcolm X and the
infamous Martin King Jr. Later on in her life is when she actually started publishing
books.
She was born in April 4, 1928 and died on May 28, 2014 meaning that she lived to be
86!!!!
She first having multiple jobs did not contribute to the civil rights movement but as
she grew older she became one of the biggest activists with her strong and moving
way with words.
She moved mainly around the east coast. From Missouri to North Carolina to New York
to Virginia.
Harriet Tubman
1820-1913
Harriet Tubman was born into slavery and stayed there until later on in life
when she got brave enough to leave both her husband and her life as a slave.
But soon after leaving she came back and rescued multiple slaves both family
and friends from bondage. She became one of the most active and leading
women against slavery before the civil war.
Harriet Tubman was born in 1820 and died in 1913. We do not know the actual
date of birth or death because they did not write any records for slaves.
Harriet Tubman mainly moved through the underground railway back and
forth. She had devoted her life to the cause.
Elijah Mc Coy
1844-1929
Elijah Mc Coy had parents who had escaped slavery before he was born. Living
in Ontario, Canada he had also gone to Scotland to train for engineering but
because of his race he was rejected in America. So instead he just worked on
the railroad until he got a reputation. Then continuing his dream to be an
engineer he tried his best to become an inventor and succeeded.
He was born in May of 1844 and died October 1929 and lived in both Canada
and America.
