This document is an engineering mechanics tutorial sheet from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MITS-FET for the Spring 2011-2012 semester. It contains 4 practice problems related to kinetics, including determining the velocity of a crate being pulled by a force, the initial acceleration of boxes on a moving conveyor belt, the speed of a block subjected to a varying force, and the final velocity and normal force on a stone being towed at an angle.

TUTORIAL SHEET-10
1. The 50-kg crate shown in Fig. rests on a horizontal surface
for which the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.3. If the crate is subjected to a 400-N towing force as shown, determine the velocity of the crate in 3 s starting from rest.
2. Boxes A and B are at rest on a conveyor belt that is
initially at rest. The belt is suddenly started in an upward direction so that slipping occurs between the belt and the boxes. Knowing that the coefficients of kinetic friction between the belt and the boxes are (k)A = 0.30 and (k)B = 0.32, determine the initial acceleration of each box.
3. A 20 kg block is subjected to a force having a constant direction
and a magnitude F = 50 x2, where x is in meters. Determine the speed of the block after it slides 3 m. When x = 0, the block is moving to the right at 2 m/s. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the surface is 0.3.
4. The 100-kg stone shown in Fig. 15-4a is originally at rest on
the smooth horizontal surface. If a towing force of 200 N, acting at an angle of 45, is applied to the stone for 10 s, determine the final velocity and the normal force which the surface exerts on the stone during this time interval.
