Student should be able to:

Explain how air is inhaled and
exhaled
Describe gaseous exchange in the
cells
Briefly explain the process of
respiration in the cells
Distinguish between respiration and
breathing.

Breathing
Respiratory System

Breathing movements
Breathing in(inhalation): When you breath air
in, the diaphragm flattens out. The ribs move
upwards and outwards. This increases the size
(volume) of the chest cavity and decreases
the pressure. Air rushes in through air or
mouth and air passages, filling the lungs with
air.
Breathing out(exhalation): The diaphragm
goes back to its original position. The volume
of the chest cavity decreases, increasing the
pressure and so forcing the air out.

Respiration
Respiration is the release of energy
from food by the use of oxygen. This
energy is needed to carry out all the
activities in the body.

Respiration
The carbon dioxide and water are
waste substances and are carried by
the blood to the lungs, where they
are breathed out. The water is
breathed out as water vapour.

Respiration and photosynthesis

Respiration and photosynthesis

compared
The two equations are similar in that
plants are using photosynthesis to
store energy in food molecules such
as sugar. In respiration we are
releasing the energy from the sugar.
The difference between to the two
processes is that in photosynthesis
the energy is absorbed as light but in
respiration it is released as chemical
energy and heat.
