Assignment 2
1) Neatly sketch and completely label the frequency spectrum for an ASK signal for a
carrier of 100kHz which is modulated with an NRZ baseband with a bit rate of 10kbps.
a. Determine the nominal and absolute minimum BW for this signal:
b. Determine the nominal and absolute minimum BW for this signal if the baseband
line coding is changed from NRZ to RZ.
2) A bandwidth of 80kHz (40kHz to 120kHz) is to be used for full-duplex FSK.
a. Neatly sketch and completely label the diagram of the system in the frequency
domain. Determine the carrier frequencies. Use nominal minimum BW criteria
and NRZ line coding.
b. What is the maximum baud rate in each direction? The maximum bit rate?
3) Eight 5Mbps channels are to be frequency division multiplexed on an absolute minimum
BW of 5MHz. With the aid of a completely labeled diagram, describe precisely how this
could be done.
4) Four 9.6kbps channels are to be time division multiplexed together in units of 3 bytes. If 6
framing bits are used find the link frame duration and bit time:
5) An 1 MHz channel is divided into 52 sub channels of 300 kHz wide using OFDM. The
system uses 48 subcarriers for data traffic and 4 channels for error correction and
control. The basic symbol rate per subcarrier is 125 kS/s. Determine the following:
a. The overall bit rate with one 20 MHz channel, all subcarriers using 16-QAM.
b. The overall bit rate with one 20 MHz channel, 24 subcarriers using 64-QAM and
24 using 16-QAM.
6) A direct-sequence spread-spectrum system uses FSK with a chipping rate of 20 to 1.
The signal-to-noise ratio for the spread signal is 5 dB (that is, the signal is 5 dB weaker
than the noise in the same bandwidth). If the data is transmitted at 50 kb/s, calculate:
a. The chipping rate
b. The bandwidth occupied by the spread signal
7)

A signal has a bit rate of 20 kb/s. Find the baud rate if the signal is transmitted using:
a. FSK with two frequencies
b. QPSK with four phase angles
c. QAM with four phase angles and four amplitudes

8) Draw a frame of a DS1 signal.

a.

How many bits are transmitted in one frame?
