3.2 Nomination criticism

There has been criticism of the predominantly white Oscar nominees and in other elds of nominees alike. For
the third time since 1995, the 20 Academy Award acting nominations were only for white actors and actresses.
The rst was in 1998 and second was in 2011.[52] David
Sims of The Atlantic states the surprising coolness towards Martin Luther King, Jr. biopic Selmanominated
for Best Picture but missing in the Directing, Actor, and
Original Screenplay categorieswith the fact that all 20
acting nominees this year are white, the rst time such a
thing has happened since the Oscars honoring the lms
of 1995.[53] The late David Carr of The New York Times
had noted that these nominations were in contrast to the
previous years awards, where 12 Years a Slave won Best
Picture and Best Supporting Actress.[54] The Guardian
columnist Bidisha also notes the overwhelmingly white
nominee list while also discussing the fact that every
nominated best director, screenwriter, screenplay adapter
and original score composer is a white man,[55] additionally suggesting that there is an inherent lack of female
representation in the Oscars this year beyond the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories. Selma was
directed by Ava DuVernay, herself an African-American
female. However, nominees Alejandro Gonzlez Irritu,

Critical reviews

Boone Isaacs, the president of the Academy, stated that

in the last two years, weve made greater strides than
we ever have in the past toward becoming a more diverse and inclusive organization through admitting new
members and more inclusive classes of members. And,
personally, I would love to see and look forward to see
a greater cultural diversity among all our nominees in
all of our categories.[56] She refrained from commenting on whether the Academy was embarrassed about the
lack of diversity, but stated that she was proud of all the
nominees.[57]

Birdmans disqualication from Best

Original Score

On December 12, 2014, the Academy of Motion Picture

Arts and Sciences released their longlist for the Academy
Award for Best Original Score, from which Birdman was
absent. Snchez had received a note from the award committee the previous day explaining the decision, quoting
rule fteen of the 87th Academy Award Rules and writing they felt the fact that the lm also contains over a
half an hour of non-original (mostly classical) music cues
that are featured very prominently in numerous pivotal
moments in the lm made it dicult for the committee
to accept your submission. Snchez decided to launch an
appeal, and along with Gonzlez Irritu and the executive vice-president of Fox Music, sent letters to the chair
of the Academys music branch executive committee,
Charles Fox, asking that the committee reconsider their
decision.[58] One of the points they raised was that the
committee had incorrectly calculated the ratio of classical to original music, which after being claried Snchez
thought he was on really solid ground.[59] A response
from Fox on December 19 however, explained that a special meeting of the music committee was held, and although its members had great respect for the score and
considered it superb, thought that the classical music
was also used as scoring, equally contributes to the effectiveness of the lm, and that the musical identity of
the lm was created by both the drums and classical music. Ultimately, they did not overturn their decision.[58]
Snchez said that he and Gonzlez Irritu were not satised with the explanation, and that to not be able to
even participate, to not be on the list, thats whats so
disappointing.[59]

5
to be more lively and bracing than any of Harris skits.[61]
Columnist Alan Sepinwall of HitFix commented, It ran
on and on and on and on so much that when host Neil
Patrick Harris nally got around to paying o a running gag about his Oscar predictions being locked in a
box on stage left, he had to stop to explain the bit to
us all over again. He said that Neil jokes were snarkier
and o-key, either the production consumed Harris, the
writing failed him, or he picked a very strange night to
go o-brand.[62] Boston.com's Charlotte Wilder wrote,
The veteran awards show host delivered a tone-deaf, disrespectful performance. Further saying, He bombed.
Which is surprising, given the personal brand hes built
as the guy who hosts award shows. But Harriss biggest
failureapparent throughout the eveningwas that he
didnt honor the basic rule of improvisation.[63] Brian
Moylan of The Guardian said The song-and-dance man
failed to hit the mark with gags that fell at and awkward
interactions with the audience. Basically, he choked.
He commented that, the problem with Harriss performance can be summed up in his gag about his Oscar predictions.[64] Los Angeles Times's Mary McNamara commented, Even the preternaturally prepped and
prolic Neil Patrick Harris seemed aected, reduced at
times to a small gure on a big stage making good job
remarks to performers and attempting to carry a longrunning joke about a box.[65]

On IMDb, ceremony also receives lower user ratings of

6.8 out of 10 from 1,306 users. Other media outlets received the broadcast slightly positive. James Poniewozik
of TIME felt that the Oscars was neither brilliant or a
disaster and that like many Hollywood productions, it
was just a long thing that felt put together by committee.
There were moving moments and tedious momentsbut
there were also just tons and tons of moments.[66] David
Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter writes that Harris
was, "'shrewd' to address the #OscarsSoWhite controversy in his rst joke of the night. However in favor he
said, Harris mastered the challenge of commanding the
room, chumming up to folks in the front rows throughout the show, while speaking directly to movie-lovers at
home.[67] Chloe Melas of Hollywood Life lauded Patrick
performance writing that, Neil is no stranger to hosting
a big awards show, he hosted the Emmy Awards in 2009,
2013, and the Tony Awards four times, so needless to say,
hes a seasoned pro. She also praised that, he did a really
good job. Neil wasnt too mean, he said some really funny
things and his opening number was fabulous!".[68] USA
Today's Robert Bianco writes in favor of Neil and criticized ceremony by calling it at Oscars and said Yet

The American telecast on ABC drew in an average 37.3

estimated drop of 6 million viewers occurred with time
zone adjustment for the period of 8:30 p.m. to 11:46
p.m. ET from ABC.[70] The show also earned a lower
Nielsen ratings with 25.0% of households watching over
a 38 share.[73][74] In addition, the program scored a lower
18-49 demo rating with a 11 rating over a 29 share among
viewers in that demographic.[75] It was the least watched
Oscar ceremony since the 81st Academy Awards in 2009
which was watched by approximately 36.3 million viewers.

In Memoriam

The annual In Memoriam segment was presented by actress Meryl Streep.[76] The montage featured an excerpt
of the Love Theme from Sophies Choice by Marvin
Hamlisch.[77]
At the conclusion of the tribute, singer Jennifer Hudson
performed the song "I Can't Let Go",[78] from season 2
