History

Research Task: The use of a carton a European War history between 1918 and 1945

A. (a) Identify the person(s)

The armoured goose in the picture represents Hitler that wants to take over
Rhine land but later he demanded more and more land.

Hitler also brought in the Goose-Step where, like the goose in the picture,
soldiers would lift their legs up high as they march through the streets.

(b) Identify the countries involved

The counties involved are Germany, which is where Hitler is from, and was in
control of from 1933-1945. The second country involved is Rhineland.

(c) Identify the different symbols and what is represented symbolically

There are many Nazi flags sticking out of the buildings it is walking past –
This flag is a symbol of Nazi Socialism which was a German political
movement that rose in the 1920’s.

There is a swastika on its chest - Cross, ancient symbol found in many

cultures and here, but especially associated with Christianity. Its symbolical
meaning is “eternity’.

The Goose holds an olive branch in its beak with a label reading "Pax
Germanica" attached to it – The label saying "Pax Germanica" basically
says, "Peace, German Style." This means that Hitler is making 'peace' by using
his force of arms and that this is the German way.

It is stepping on a torn Locarno Pact- Representing the Locarno Treaty

which was made to respect borders and stay within your own. He is stepping
all over it and therefore proving that he wants more land for Germany.

The Gooose-Step (the way he walks) was brought in by Adolf Hitler where
soldiers would lift their legs up high as they march through the streets step by
step.

(d) Explain any written part.

The nursery rhyme Goosey Goosey Gander:

The Goose-Step
"Goosey Goosey Gander.
Whither dost thou wander?"
"Only through the Rhineland—
Pray excuse my Blunder!"

The Goose is asked where he is going and he says that he’s only going through
Rhineland and asks that his mistake may be excused. Hitler claimed at first
that he was ‘only going for Rhineland’ but later demanded and conquered
more and more land

B. Explain the historical situation( The story behind the picture)

This cartoon is a political by E. H. Shepard drawn in 1936 and shows that the
remilitarization of Rhineland was the first step Hitler took towards eliminating or
bringing to an end the Treaty of Versailles.

At first Hitler claimed that he was going only for Rhineland "only through the
Rhineland" but step by step he started taking over more land and demanded more.

The weapons strapped to the Goose represent the rearmament rally which rapidly
increased Germany's armed forces and there is a map of Europe strapped to his
waist, showing his territorial aspirations.

The torn Locarno paper which the goose stands on is representing the Locarno
Treaty which was made to respect borders and stay within your own. He is clearly
stepping all over it and therefore proving his desire for greater land for Germany.
He shows that he Will Not respect borders and most definitely will not stay within
his own.

The olive branch in the gooses' beak has a label attached saying "Pax Germanica"
which is basically saying, "Peace, German Style." This means that Hitler is
making 'peace' by using his force of arms and that this is the German way.

Hitler wants to make peace but not just in any way, he wants to do it the German
way by using force, military and basically just taking over everything that they
possibly can.

Before the Treaty of Versailles, Germany lost lots of land and their economy
became poor. Here Hitler is stating that he’s in control and tries to restore power,
the economy and trying to win over land to make up for the land that they lost. He
clearly is not in favour of this treaty either.
