INTO CSU 204 Reading Lesson Plan
This lesson plan was created and successfully implemented in my 204 Reading class at
INTO CSU. INTO CSU is an Academic English Program that students from around the globe
can attend to help improve their English and prepare them to succeed at an English-speaking
university. In this class, I taught 15 students (1 female and 15 males) for this class from two L1
backgrounds: 5 Chinese and 10 Arabic L1 speakers. This lesson was used in week 3, when
students had been practicing summary writing, making personal connections, affixation, and
vocabulary. This lesson was delivered just before they took their mid-term exam.
English language area: Summary writing and making predictions
Students: upper-intermediate, 16 university students, various L1s
Time: 80 - minute class
Lesson topic: Comparing The Giver novel and comic.
Pre-lesson inventory:
Overview of goals:
1. Language to compare two types of writing (book versus comic) and notice differences and
similarities between them; also, to review summary writing and administer a formative
assessment of two chapters and make predictions for the next chapter.
2. Content To talk about the novel The Giver that student are reading and understand the
story clearly, with visuals for help.
Introduction: (5 minutes) Purpose: To convey todays lesson objectives and plan to students.
Procedure: Teacher will write todays lesson plan on the board, check for completion of the
previous nights homework and return any previous work.

Warm-up: (20 minutes) Purpose: To give students a chance to review their homework from the
previous night, which focused on chapters 10 and 11 of The Giver and asked students to
identify the who/did what/where/when/why in the chapter, as well as the characters, settings,
conflicts, plot points and main idea and to take that information and write a short summary.
Procedure:
-

Students are assigned to groups of three. In their groups, they will check their answers

and they can edit their own summaries. (See chapter 10&11 worksheet below.)
Students from each group are asked to fill in the web and homework questions from the

worksheet on the white board so we can go over them as a class.

As a class, the teacher guides the discussion of the answers and we add and subtract as
the students see fit. The teacher will leave this on the white board because we will use it
later.

Transition: Let the students know that now that we are familiar with chapter 10 and 11, lets
look at an illustration of the chapter to see whats different and whats similar.
Activity 1: (30 minutes) Purpose: To reinforce what theyve already read through images.
Procedure:
-

The teacher puts on the DOC cam the colored printed pages of the comic (which can be
found at this website: http://www.mtv.com/news/1882355/the-giver-comic-book-comic-

con/)
The teacher can hand out the worksheet (see below).
We read through the short comic together as a class one time.
Looking at the worksheet, we discuss the similarities and differences and make a list on

the DOC cam together.

As a class we answer the true and false questions, which may have already been
identified in the differences/similarities worksheet.

-

The teacher will tell the students that this comic book chapter combines chapters 10, 11
and 12. (12 is homework.) Now, they are to write their predictions for chapter 12 with

this new information.

Student volunteers will share their predictions.

Transition: Introduce the quiz, which will focus on chapter 10 and 11 only.
Quiz 1: (20 minutes) Purpose: a formative quiz to assess summary writing.
Procedure:
-

Students will be given a short quiz wherein they will write a summary for chapters 10 and

11.
They may use the notes provided on the board that we created as a class.

Closing/Homework: (5 minutes) Purpose: to collect the quiz and assign homework.

Procedure: Assign homework Students will read a non-fiction piece about utopias and
dystopias and answer questions from the reading.
