Perform a SLED 11 Installation

SLES vs SLED
Both are based on the same code base from
SuSE.

SLED

has been optimized to function as an end user


workstation.

Includes services and applications for a


workstation role (e.g., OpenOffice.Org)

SLES

Has been optimized to function as a server

Includes DNS, DHCP, Web Server, etc.

Boot from the Installation Media

OBJECTIVE3:
Troubleshoot the
Installation Process

Common Problems
Problem: The system does not start from the installation
media

Possible Cause: The system is not configured to boot


from the DVD drive
Solution: Access the BIOS setup and select the DVD
drive as the first boot drive.

Possible Cause: The DVD is defective

Solution: Obtain a different copy / perform media check.

Common Problems
Problem: The installation program does not start or
abnormally stops during installation.

Possible Cause: Your system does not support newer


hardware features correctly.
Solution: Select ACPI Disabled from the boot menu; OR
select Safe Settings from the boot menu.

Possible Cause: Your system has less than 256 MB of


main memory.
Solution: Install at least 256 MB of main memory and
start the installation again.

Common Problems

Problem: The network connection test or on-line update fails.

Possible Cause: There is no DHCP server in the network.


Solution: If you configured your network card to use DHCP,
assign a static IP address and configure routing and DNS
settings manually.

Possible Cause: There is no route to the Internet.

Solution: Set the default gateway correctly.

Possible Cause: There is no direct Internet connection but the


system is using no, or the wrong, proxy settings.
Solution: Set the correct proxy configuration in the Network
Configuration dialog.

Common Problems
Problem: The graphical login does not appear after the
installation is completed.

Possible Cause:

Solution: Change to a text console and enter init 3. Start


sax2 from the command line and correct the X11
configuration. Enter init 5 to get a graphical login screen.
