PROS

It would strengthen Europes relations

with fast evolving regions like Caucasus
and Central Asia, to the new Middle
East thats emerging from the Arab
Spring.
Turkeys unique geo-strategic position,
plus the strength of NATOs secondlargest army would greatly add to
European security.
Turkey is already a vibrant democracy.

The Turkish economy is growing by

3.5% and bringing it into the EU would
bring 75 million consumers to a single
market.
Reaching out to this Muslim democracy
would send a clear signal that Europe is open
to the Islamic world.
If the EU turns down Turkey, they could
cause rivalry between them and NATO.

CONS
Turkey is not a European country with
97% of its body in Asia. Letting one
non-European nation into the EU would
open doors for others to come in.
With a population predicted to reach 91
million by 2050, it will be the dominant
member of the EU.
Human rights are barely followed in
Turkey and Amnesty Internationals
annual reports prove it.
Though Turkey weathered the economic
crisis much better than most, it failed to
push through necessary reforms and
economic growth is falling while
unemployment is rising.
Turkeys historical interaction with Europe
has always been as an outside invader.
