problems.Thestepslistedbelowwillwalkyouthroughthefirstproblemontonightshomework.

1. Readyourchildthefirstsentenceinthewordproblem.Theyshouldactitoutbyplacing3
paperclipsendtoendwithnogapsoroverlapsnexttothewordblueatthebottomofthis
page.
2. Readyourchildthesecondsentenceinthewordproblem.Theyshouldactitoutby
placing3paperclips(matchingwhattheydidforblue)nexttothewordgreenatthebottom
ofthispage.Thentheyshouldadd2morepaperclipsforatotalof5paperclips.
3. Readyourchildthethirdsentenceinthewordproblem.Theyshouldactitoutbyplacing3
paperclips(matchingwhattheydidforblue)nexttothewordredatthebottomofthispage.
Thentheyshouldtakeawayoneofthosepaperclipssincethedirectionsinthewordproblem
indicatetheredstringisonelesspapercliplong.Thisshouldleave2paperclipsnexttothe
wordred.
4. Readyourchildthelastsentenceinthewordproblem.Nowthatyourchildknowsthelength
ofeachstring,theycandeterminetheorderfromlongesttoshortest.Theyshoulddetermine
thelongeststring,(green)andmovethepaperclipsintothefirstpositionontheirhomework
sheettodrawthegreenstring.Studentsshouldthenrecordthenumberthattellsabout
howmanypaperclipslongthegreenstringis.
5. Thenyourchildshouldrepeattheprocessoutlinedin#4withthenextlongeststring(blue).
6. Yourchildshouldcompletetheproblembyrepeatingtheprocessoutlinedin#4withthe
shorteststring(red).
