Sofarithasbeenagreatyear,andithasbeenmypleasurebeingyourschool
counselor.IcannotbelieveitisalmostThanksgiving!Iamsothankfultoworkat
CentralMiddle.Iwantedtotakesometimetotellyouallalittlemoreaboutmyjob
andwhatIdo.Iamnotaguidancecounselor,butaschoolcounselor.Whatisthe
difference?Thetermguidancecounselorisnowconsideredanoldterm.Someone
whowasaguidancecounselorwasmainlytheretofocusonguidingstudentsto
collegeandthroughpassingclasses.Luckily,nowwehaveschoolcounselorswho
aretrainedwithaMastersDegreespecifictoschoolcounseling.Schoolcounselors
studyhowtohandlecounselingissuessuchassuicide,cutting,socialskills,
friendships,angermanagement,grief,specialeducation,groupcounseling,
absenteeism,andacademicsupport,tonameafew..Schoolcounselorsarealso
trainedtofollowtheTheAmericanSchoolCounselorAssociation(ASCA)whohas
createdaNationalModelforSchoolCounselorsinordertoconnectschool
counselorswithcurrenteducationalmovementsthatemphasizestudentachievement
andsuccess.Schoolcounselingisaprogramthatbenefitsstudents,parents,
teachers,administrators,andthecommunity(ASCA,2012).Inordertobepartners
instudentachievementschoolcounselorsworkundertheASCANationalModel
anditscompetencies.TheASCANationalModelsupportsschool'soverallmissions
bypromotingacademicachievement,careerplanning,andpersonal/social
development.TheASCANationalModelhasfourinterrelatedcomponents:
foundation,delivery,management,andaccountability.
CentralMiddleSchoolCounselingMission:
Themissionoftheschoolcounselingprogramistoprovideallstudentswitha
comprehensiveschoolcounselingprogramshapedaroundstudentachievementas
wellastheirgrowthinacademics,career,andpersonal/socialdomains.
