DeWitt Clinton High School be-
came the city basketball champion
of the Public Schools Athletic
League yesterday afternoon by de-
feating Seward Park High School,
35 to 22, in the final-round battle
of the 1936-37 tournament at the
1024 Engineers Armory. A crowd
of 4,500 saw the Clinton fiva cap-
ture the city crown for the second
time since 1933.| Clinton jumped into the lead in
the opening minute and, although
the lower Manhattan Division win-
ners put up a gallant fight all the
way, Coach Hal Regan’s team was
never in danger after the first half.
Both teams were nervous in the
first session and there was occa-
sional wild passing. They settled
down to more serious basketball
lafter the Intermission, however.
Clinton seemed to have the smooth-
er attack and had a 29-18 advan-
tage after a few minutes of the
final quarter.
Clinton's play was featured by
smart under-the-basket work, with
Leo Gottlieb, Ralph Kaplowitz and
Captain Een Auerbach, the stara.
Gottlieb and Kaplowitz contributed
ten points apiece to share scoring
laurels, and Auerbach tacked on
eight tallies,
Glover Opens Scoring
Mel Glover, Clinton left forward,
gave his mates a 1-0 lead as the
game began when he sank foul
throw. Seward then gained its first
and only advantage during the
clash as Sol Schwartz, center,
dropped in a short toss. A shot
from underneath by Kaplowitz aft-
er a relay from Glover, provided
Clinton with a 3-2 margin.Ed McCann tied for Seward from
the 15-foot, stripe, but Clarence
Younger, Clinton guard, tossed in @
one-hander to put the champions in
front. Two successive goals by
Kaplowitz gave Clinton a 9-5 lead
at the end of the first quarter.
A foul by Younger and 4 lay-up
shot by Kaplowitz boosted the Clin-
ton margin, Izzy Banks. put one in
from the side and Chubby Sherman
made a one-pointer to pull Seward
up to 8—12. Auerbach and HKap-
lowitz collaborated for another field
foal for Clinton. Gottlieb followed
with a set shot and, after Sherman
and Sol Schwartz had sent the ball
swishing through the net, Gottlieb
rang up another floor goal, and as
the half ended Clinton was in front,
18—12,
Clinton's offensive was faster as
the third quarter opened. Glover
registered a foul and John Mro-
chowski, Seward left guard, also
dropped in one. Kaplowits and
Auerbach each threw in set shots.
Sehwartz scored from the circle and
Banks got a one-pointer ta bring
Seward up to 16—23.
