South Carolina State Shut Down?
(Orangeburg, SC February 11, 2015) - On Wednesday morning at 9:14a.m., the
House Ways Committee officially voted unanimously to shut down the university.
Hopefully, the school has a clean slate, Merrill from the House Ways Committee states
Its not the intention of the committee to wipe S.C. State off the planet. The university
will be shut down for, July 1st of 2015 and will reopen in June 1st of 2016. The school
would reopen under new leadership in 2016.
South Carolina State University is truly sad to announce this big change. The 3,000
students at the states only historically black public college could get state scholarships to
attend other S.C. public colleges or any historically black university.
Student body President Mr. Aaron Reid states, I am so upset to see the progress and
impact the students have made on this campus officially snatched away from them. I will
forever love MY SCSU. The university is encouraging all students, alumni, supporters,
and parents to remain calm. We have set up a hotline due to increasing amount of
incoming calls. If you have any concerns please call (803)734-2100.

ABOUT SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY

Founded in 1896 as the state's sole public college for black youth, South Carolina State
University has played a key role in the education of African-Americans in the state and
nation. As a land-grant institution, it struggled to provide agricultural and mechanical
training to generations of black youngsters. Through its extension program, it sent farm
and home demonstration agents into rural counties to provide knowledge and information
to impoverished black farm families.
