Report on DG #2 Generator Failure and

Repair

DG#2 was taken off-line at 0001hrs today Feb 28, 2014 for mechanical maintenance and
generator inspection. The generator inspection revealed two broken amortisseur connections for

poles 10-11 and poles 11-12 at the generator non- drive end, and six on the drive end side for
poles 2-3, 3-4, 4-5, 5-6, 11-12 and 1-12, all failures occurred at the fastener hole (see pictures).
The failure of these connections did not result in any damages to the generator.
The broken connection pieces were all replaced with fabricated piece (done in-house). Using a
copper alloy that is softer.
The material used by TAW to fabricate these connection pieces appear to be too brittle and not
suitable for this application, JEP therefore will embark on replacing all of these connections with
a better suited copper alloy, and in addition applying a suitable Loctite adhesive to the fasteners.
