‘The 12 UK Majorettes practice
many long and hard hours each
‘week to perform less than 15 min-
utes a game. They endure the
‘weather, sometimes biting cold,
to entertain the spectators and
enhance the marching band dur-
ing half-time.
"The majorettes practice each
school day at least two hours.
‘They start practicing one hour be-
fore the band at 4:00 p.m. and

5:00 they coordinate their routine
and their field positions with the
band. It is up to them to choreo-

Particular style of music the band
performs,
W. Harry Clarke, UK Band Dir-
ector, believes the majorettes are
very important element of the
band. “They are definitely crowd-
pleasers,” he said. "A lot of bands
don't have majorettes because
nowadays bands are patterned
after contemporary drum and bu-
gle comps with only flags and rif-
les, but we feel the majorettes
play a major part in the show and
they are traditional-looking.”
‘When the majorettes are select-
fed each year, they are not only
chosen on their twirling ability.
They must be able to dance well
and execute their ability to the
fullest and they must compliment
each of the other majorettes on
the squad in ability. On the field
they are all required to be able
to perform many different styles
Sandy Cole, head majorette,
has been on the squad for four
years and plans to be a band dir-
ector after she graduates. She
said, “I feel the showmanship and
techniques | have learned through
being a majorette will help me in
my Career goals.” She added,
“Being a majorette is more of 3
sport than most people teelize,
But every year has been worth the
