Wildcat Marching Band The 1978 University of Kentucky Wildcat” March- ing Band numbers some 270 members from almost every college of the University. The members come from each geographical area of Kentucky ond from. the states of Ohio, New York, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Michigan, West Virginia, Georgio, Tennessee, New Jersey and Indiana. Except for the two directors, the band is largely stu- dent run, with group leaders and a section leader for each instrument, a group of some twenty marching cssistants, a head flag, head majorette, a percussion head and coordinator, and an Executive Board of elec- ted officers — PREGAME — The music for Pregame includes “People,” An. other Opening, Another Show” and one of the marches "Semper Fidelis or “Band of America.” Pregame also includes the traditional Marching ‘’K and "On, On, U of K.” — HALFTIME — At one point or another in the halftime perfor- mance, everyone in Commonwealth Stadium should hear music which suits their particular tastes. The Performance begins with a stirring arrangement of John Phillip Sousa’s most famous march, "Stars and Stripes Forever.’ Executing a musical “about face,’” the Band follows this traditional march with a modern jazz composition by Chuck Mangione, "Feel of a. Vision.” Somewhere between these two musical op- posites falls the concert number “In the Mood,” re- Calling the big band era and the Glenn Miller Band, Having ottempted to satisfy the collective tostes of those in the stands, the Band plays one strictly for their own satisfaction. From the soundtrack of the, movie Children of Sanchez comes the finale for half- time, Chuck Mangione's powerful “Bellavia.” Could, it be that the fans, no matter what their musical preference, will be caught up in the overpowering, intensity of good modern music, played as only the UK Band can play it?
