FOREWORD
With the publication Living Conditions in Greece, the Hellenic Statistical Authority
(ELSTAT) provides to users significant statistical data reflecting living conditions in
Greece, concentrated in one publication.
The publication includes data concerning a wide range of factors (labour, health, education, technology, etc.) that affect living conditions, as well as data on the quality of life,
such as poverty and social exclusion. This publication presents statistical time series compiled mainly by ELSTAT, but also comparative tables with other European Union countries
on selected social indicators.
Written in Greek and English, this publication is aimed at users looking for an update concerning recent social developments, but also long-term social trends. The publication will
be updated the first Friday of January, March, May, July, September and November with
the most recently available statistical data.
For further information on the data and statistics provided in Living Conditions in Greece,
please contact the Division of Statistical Information and Publications of ELSTAT
(tel: +30 213 1352022, e-mail: data.dissem@statistics.gr).
We welcome any suggestions on the content of the publication.

(1) Age dependency ratio: the ratio of the number of economically non-active persons (aged 0 - 14 and 65+) compared with the number of economically active
persons (aged 15 - 64).
Ageing ratio: the number of persons aged 65 years or over per hundred persons under the age of 15.
Total fertility rate: he average number of living children that a woman will give birth to over the course of her lifetime (provided that during her reproductive
age, the fertility conditions prevail by age of the reference year). The total fertility rate is used in order to determine the level of replacement of the generations, which, in developed countries, is considered to be 2.1.
Total mortality rate: the number of deaths per 1,000 people.
Infant mortality rate: the number of children dying at less than a year of age divided by the number of live births that year. The ratio is expressed by
1,000 live births.
(2) The indices for the years 2008 - 2012 have been compiled on the basis of the revised estimated population which derived from the 2011 Population Census.
The indices for the previous years (2001 - 2007) will also be revised after the revision of the estimated population for these years.

The at-risk-of-poverty rate after social transfers is the share of persons living in households where the total equivalised disposable income is below the at-risk-of-poverty threshold, i.e., lower than 60% of the national median equivalised disposable income
(median income means the income in the middle of the distribution).

The equivalised individual disposable income is the total disposable income of a household divided by the equivalised household
size. The equivalised household size is calculated using a standard equivalence scale, called the modified OECD scale. This scale
gives a weight to all members of the household: 1.0 to the first adult; 0.5 to the second adult and each subsequent person aged
14 and over; 0.3 to each child aged under 14. For example: the income of a household with 2 adults and 2 children under the age
of 14 is divided by 1+ 0.5 + (2x0.3) = 2.1. Accordingly, the income of a household with 2 adults is divided by 1+ 0.5 = 1.5 and the
income of a household with 2 adults and 2 children aged 14 and over is divided by 1+ 0.5 + (2 x 0.5) = 2.5, etc.
Social transfers include social assistance (i.e., the social solidarity allowance for pensioners called EKAS, lump sum payments
to support poor households in mountainous and disadvantageous areas, allowances to long-term unemployed aged 45 - 65, etc.)
and allowances such as family / children-related allowances, unemployment, sickness, disability / invalidity benefits, as well as
education-related allowances.

(2) People-at-risk-of-poverty or social exclusion: this indicator reflects the share of the population which is either at risk of poverty or severely materially deprived or lives in a household with a very low work intensity.
(3) People living in households with very low work intensity: share of population aged 18 - 59 living in households where the working-age members worked
less than 20% of their total work potential during the past year. The work intensity of the household is the ratio of the total number of months that all
working-age household members have worked during the income reference year and the total number of months the same household members could
theoretically have worked in the same period. A working-age person is a person aged 18 - 59 with the exclusion of students in the age group between18
and 24 years. Households which consist only of children, of students aged less than 25 and / or people aged 60 or more are excluded from the indicator
calculation.

(1) The data of this table derive from the Survey on Income and Living Conditions (EU - SILC), which is being conducted since 2003.
(2) The income quintile share ratio or the S80/S20 ratio is a measure of the inequality of income distribution. It is calculated as the ratio of total equivalised
disposable income received by the 20% of the countrys population with the highest equivalised disposable income to that received by the 20% of the
countrys population with the lowest equivalised disposable income. In other words, it compares the income share of the richest 20% of the population
with that of the poorest 20% of the population.
(3) The Gini coefficient is defined as the relationship of cumulative shares of the population arranged according to the level of equivalised disposable income
to the cumulative share of the total equivalised disposable income received by them. If there was perfect income equality (i.e., all persons receive the
same income) the Gini coefficient would be 0%. A Gini coefficient of 100% indicates that there is total income inequality and the entire national income
is in the hands of one person. For example, a Gini coefficient of 30% means that choosing randomly 2 persons, the difference between their income is
at 30% of the mean income.

(1) School expectancy corresponds to the expected years of education over a lifetime and has been calculated adding the single-year enrolment rates for
all ages from the age of 5 years and over. To illustrate the meaning of school expectancy, let us take an example: school expectancy for the age of 10
would be one year, if all 10-year-old students (in the year of the data collection) were enrolled. If only 50 % of 10-year-old students were enrolled, school
expectancy for the age of 10 would be half a year.

(1) The data of this table derive from the Survey on Income and Living Conditions (EU - SILC), which is being conducted since 2003.
(2) The population is divided into fives equal groups according to their income, from lowest to highest. Each one of these groups is called quintile. The
bottom quintile (1st quintile) is the lowest 20 percent of the population, while the top quintile (5th quintile) is the highest 20 percent.
(3) Among the possible reasons for unmet needs are: economic reasons (the individuals could not afford the cost) or waiting lists, lack of time, distance,
fear for doctors, hospitals, etc.

Note: Fluctuations in the number of museums and archaeological sites are usually on account of one of the following reasons:
a) creation of new museums,
b) characterization of new sites as archaeological sites,
c) provisional discontinuation of operation of museums or archaeological sites, due to maintenance or restoration works, etc.,
d) provisional discontinuation of operation of some small local museums, due to the lack of personnel or more generally of funding for covering their operational expenditures.

(1) Municipal waste consists to a large extent of waste generated by households and it may also includes similar waste generated by small businesses and
offices and is collected by the municipality. For areas not covered by a municipal waste collection scheme, the amount of waste generated is estimated.
Waste from agriculture and industry are not included. Waste from municipal sewage network and treatment as well as municipal construction and demolision waste are excluded.
Deposit of waste into or onto land includes specially engineered landfill, uncontrolled areas of disposal and temporary storage of over one year.
Recycling means any recovery operation by which waste materials are reprocessed into products, materials or substances whether for the original or
other purposes.
Composting is the treatment of biodegradable materials and it is presented as a separate category.
