Aurora
Anaurorais a natural light display in the skypredominantly seen in the
high latitude (Arctic andAntarctic) regions. The name auroras is now more
commonly used for the linguistic plural aurorae of aurora, so is adopted
throughout the main text of this article. Modern style guides recommend that the
names of meteorological phenomena, such asaurora borealis, be uncapitalized.
Auroras are caused by charged particles, mainly electrons and protons, entering
the atmosphere from above causing ionization and excitation of atmospheric
constituents, and consequent optical emissions. Incident protons can also
produce emissions as hydrogen atoms after gaining an electron from the
atmosphere.

Grand Canyon
TheGrand Canyonis a steep-sidedcanyoncarved by theColorado
Riverin the state ofArizonain theUnited States. It is contained within and
managed by Grand Canyon National Park, the HualapaiTribal Nation,
theHavasupai Tribeand theNavajo Nation Navajo. PresidentTheodore
Rooseveltwas a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area,
and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery.
The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446km) long, up to 18 miles (29km)
wide and attains a depth of over a mile (6,000 feet or 1,800 meters).Nearly
two billion years of Earth's geological history have been exposed as the
Colorado River and its tributaries cut theirchannels through layer after layer
of rock while theColorado Plateauwasuplifted. While the specific geologic
processes and timing that formed the Grand Canyon are the subject of debate
by geologists, recent evidence suggests that the Colorado River established
its course through the canyon at least 17 million years ago.Since that time,
the Colorado River continued to erode and form the canyon to its present-day
configuration.
Mount Everest

Mahalangur section of theHimalayas. Its peak is 8,848 meters (29,029ft) above

7,855m (25,771ft) andChangtse, 7,580m (24,870ft).
In 1856, theGreat Trigonometrical Survey of Indiaestablished the first
published height of Everest, then known asPeak XV, at 29,002ft (8,840m).
The current official height of 8,848m (29,029ft) as recognized by Nepal and
China was established by a 1955 Indian survey and subsequently confirmed by a
Chinese survey in 1975. In 1865, Everest was given its official English name by
theRoyal Geographical Societyupon a recommendation byAndrew Waugh, the
BritishSurveyor General of India. Waugh named the mountain after his
predecessor in the post,Sir George Everest, arguing that there were many local
names, against the opinion of Everest.
