Importance of sociocultural approach

1. Creating an environment in
which pupils behave appropriately,
not out of fear of punishment or
desire for reward, but out of a
sense of personal responsibility.

2. Vygotsky is relevant to
instructional concepts such as
"scaffolding" in which a teacher or
more advanced peer helps to
structure or arrange a task so that a
novice can work on it successfully.

3. Learners should be provided with

socially rich environments to
promote social interaction among
the pupils.
ICTs can be used to support the
learning environment by providing
tools for discourse, discussions,
collaborative writing, and problemsolving.

4. Emphasizes the importance of

social and collaborative aspects of
learning. Ellis (2000) claims that
sociocultural theory focuses on how
the learner accomplishes a task and
how the interaction between
learners can scaffold and assist in
the L2 acquisition process.
