how do ascribed and achieve statuses serve to identify who a person is in a culture?

What are reference groups? How are reference groups experienced in society?
(Jonathan Chun)
Ascribed status is given to a person by society. It excludes the persons
characteristics or talents. Achieved status is a position in society that we have
earned as a result of something weve done. In cultural cases, since ascribe status is
given, it is hard to change due to their race and sex. However for achieved status, it
can either be positive or negative. Reference group is a group where people
compare themselves and it provides a standard of measurement. For example, in
our society, peer groups are common reference groups. We tend to pay attention to
our peers, what they look like, what do they do for free time, and what they wear.
Most of people have more than one reference group. A high school student might
look at his own classmates but also at his older sisters friends and observe the
difference between them.
What is a social role (give examples)? How does one violate his or her role? What is
meant by role exit? And how does role exit relate to the socialization process?
Distinguish between primary and secondary groups (give examples). (Jason
Marquez)
Social role is a set of expectations, duties, norms. and rights that a person has to
fullfill and face everyday or almost everyday. For example Police officers have the
duty to protect and serve the people, and teacher are expected to educate our
youth and help them become better prepared. Role exit is when a person decides to
leave their role and stop performing their duties or role in society. Our youth takes
note of the actions of adults around and are directly affected by their actions or
mimic the decisions adults make as well. Primary Group is a small group of people
who interact on close and personal level, like small group of best friends, while a
Secondary Group is a larger group of people of people who arent necessarily as
typical close or relationships are temporary like and entire High School senior class
who all go their separate ways in life.
What is meant by in-group and out-group? How is in-group connected to primary
group? How is out group connected to secondary group? (Miranda Gutierrez)
In-group are different kinds of categories of people who have the same kinds
of identities.
Out-group where others dont belong and cant seem to fit in. Well
in-group members and primary members moving the influence a way a person
thinks or believes. Out-group is connected by secondary group because they have
very little social skills, so that way out-group and secondary group are very similar
with little social skills.
What are the five functional prerequisites that a society must satisfy if it is to
survive? Describe the differences between organic and mechanical solidarity.
(Derrin Jenkins)
The five functional prerequisites that a society must satisfy to survive are Division of
Labor, Hierarchy of Authority, Written Rules and Regulations, Impersonality and

Employment based on Technical Qualifications. Mechanical solidarity is the social

integration of members of a society who have common values and beliefs and
organic solidarity is social integration that arises out of the need of individuals for
one another's services. The differences between mechanical and organic is
mechanical is sharing similar interests and believe in the same things in comparison
to organic where people need one anothers abilities whether or not the comparison
or likes are similar.
