Biology
Grade 9
This quarter in Biology class we studied natural selection and adaptation, through
lectures, research and hands-on learning experiences. Students demonstrated their
understandings of the class material and of the scientific method through class
discussion, practical labs, and written responses to investigation and exploration
questions, as well as unit tests.
Sarita meets the standard for demonstrating understanding of natural selection. Her
labs are meticulous, and show confidence in laboratory procedure, making
observations, and thinking scientifically. Despite joining the class nearly four weeks
into the term, Sarita has settled into the class exceptionally well. She is an active
participant and shows a keen interest in Biology. I recommend that Sarita practice
more formal note-taking skills during lectures she has an excellent memory for
Biology, but if she continues her studies in the field the day will come when she will
find good note-taking skills essential. More note-taking may also help her in her
preparation for written tests.
Heres what it really consists of:
Standards assessed during the reporting period.
Typical or important learning experiences and events of the reporting period.
How student learning was assessed.
How and to what extent student met the standards.
Affective factors that impacted this students learning: learning dispositions and habits.
Recommendations/suggestions to support student learning

Math 8
Sarita Malan
This quarter in Grade 8 Math we investigated probability, and explored the ways
probability can be represented symbolically. Students demonstrated their math skills
during Math for the Masses mathematics fair.
In classwork, as well as during her weekly quizzes and in our unit test Sarita
demonstrated understanding of theoretical and experimental probabilities that meets
the standard. She is also able to represent probability of events as a percent or a
fraction. Sarita is currently working on finding the probability of multiple events and
determining all possible outcomes. In her math journal Sarita writes that she is most
confident working in small groups, but is developing more confidence and focus in

her independent work as well. I also have noticed that Sarita seems much less
nervous about written tests these days.

Grade 9 Finnish Language

This month in Finnish Language class we learned to greet one another formally and
informally, to talk about the world using the present indicative tense, to ask simple
questions, and to discuss our families, school and pastimes. The class built new
vocabulary through listening to traditional Finnish folktales and, as a final assessment
for the unit, each student wrote an original folktale in Finnish.
Sarita has made a very smooth transition into Finnish class. Her oral and written quizzes
show that she is able to use the present indicative tense with a variety of regular and
irregular verbs, with very few mistakes. Although she is careful with her grammar and
pronunciation Sarita is not afraid to make mistakes and this, aided by her confidence
and willingness to participate in class discussion and to ask questions, is her greatest
asset as a language learner. Her oral presentation on her family delivered with energy
and originality and showed an excellent sense of humor as well. I would be happy to
provide Sarita with some interesting extra reading in Finnish, if she would like to extend
her skills even further. Pit rakentaa sanastoa, Sarita!

All the comments address the standards and show, in various ways, how the student meets the standards -but the teachers all have different approaches, and choose different things to focus on. This means we get a
nice picture of the range of things the student is learning and how her learning is being assessed, and lots of
different kinds of information about the student as a learner. In this way, teachers diverse approaches
become a strength of the report.
