BACTERIAL GROWTH

Final Lab Assignment

YOU ARE PARTIALLY

DESIGNING A LAB!
You will design a laboratory investigation to study
how antibacterial agents affect population
growth of bacteria
You must submit a lab proposal form today as a
group
Your write up will be done individually, and will be
given to you as a handout

THE LAB PROPOSAL

By the end of class today you must submit your lab
design or proposal sheet.
1 per group.
Groups of 3 to 4 students.
This sheet will be given back tomorrow.

A FEW NOTES ON
VARIABLES
Everyone will have the same dependent variable.
What is it?
You may only manipulate 1 independent variable in
your study. The rest must be kept constant.
Everyone will need a control group to compare their
test groups against.

A FEW NOTES ON
RESOURCES.
You should have a minimum of 3 resources to support your
lab design / proposal. These could include:
Growth conditions
Other experiments on bacteria
How your variables will affect the bacteria

(Just write down the links to the resources so that you can go
back to them later if you need them).

A FEW NOTES ON YOUR

METHOD.
Your method should include:
How you will conduct the study
How you will keep the other non-testing variables
constant
How you will obtain and record your data
Ie. Will you make a chart and check the number of
bacterial colonies every day?

HOW CAN WE
OBTAIN/RECORD OUR DATA?
You will need to determine if your variables are
increasing or decreasing the rate of growth, so
ultimately we will need to count our colonies!
We can do this thanks to Kochs postulate!

KOCHS SCI FOR AGAR

PLATED YEAST
Koch determined that when a liquid sample is plated
on agar and allowed to grow, each individual cell on
the plate will give rise to its own individual colony.
Therefore, if we count the colonies on our plate, we
know how many cells are
living /
reproducing
from our
original batch
