My Family Tree

Home Project
Due: Friday, March 20
THIS PROJECT IS DESIGNED FOR STUDENTS TO DISCOVER THEIR
FAMILY HISTORY AND EXPLORE THE DIFFERENT PLACES THEIR
ANCESTORS CAME FROM AND WHY AND HOW THEY MADE THEIR TRIP
TO THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.
Standards:
S.S 2.1.1 Trace the history of a family through the use of primary and
secondary sources, including artifacts, photographs, interviews, and
documents.
S.S. 2.23 Locate on a map where their ancestors live (d), telling when the
family moved to the local community and how and why they made the trip.
C.C. RL6 Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation
in order to provide requested detail or clarification.

Instructions:

1. Students, with the help of their family, will gather information

about four generations of their family. (For example: student,
parents, grandparents and great-grandparentsthat would be
four generations.)
1. Names of each family member
2. Relationship to student
3. Birthplace
4. Photo (Drawing will be accepted if a photo is not available)

2. Students, with the help of family will be expected to create a

visual of your family tree with all the information above. All
information must be labeled by the student with her/his best
writing. However, I ask that you not use a traditional family tree
layout. You are encouraged to be creative!
Some ideas include: a poster showing your family as a garden,
ocean creatures, or sports team, a diorama using animals or cars
to represent family members.

3. Students will present their project in class. During the

presentation, the student will focus on one family member on
their tree that has moved from one community to another. They
will need to include:
1. Name of family member
2. Birthplace
3. Locate country on world map
4. How did they move to the local community?
5. Why did they move to the local community?

On the back, you will find the projects grading checklist.

Good luck and most importantly have fun!
