    San Juan Capistrano was the 7th mission established in California. It was originally built in 1775 and rebuilt in 1776. The mission was founded by Father Junipero Serra and named after Saint John Capistrano. Located at the corner of Ortega Highway, the mission sought to convert the local Achjachmen village Indians to Christianity. Known as the "Jewel of the Missions", San Juan Capistrano is famous for the annual return of swallows on March 19th and had a high number of earthquakes each week when it was active.
