Introduction/Background
Many of us have experienced it. An obsessive compulsion to eat our multi-coloured candies colourby-colour. But oh so much time is spent doing so! The effort: pouring all the candies onto a surface
and then engaging in the tedious task of arranging them. Imagine having an efficient and fun way
to sort them. And that is what we will be creating: a machine that sorts it for you, so you can do
something else while your sweets are being grouped, or watch the satisfying process of your sugary
snacks being organized automatically.
Purpose & Objectives

We will be creating a machine that sorts coloured candies by using an Arduino, a servomotor, and

various sensors.
We will learn how to install sensors and programme them so that they communicate with the

Arduino.
We will learn how to install motors and programme them so that they spin when the Arduino tells

them to.
We will be developing our own code and use problem-solving methods to remove bugs in it.
Project Scope and Possible Objectives

I plan on 3D-printing various parts that will be used in the machine.

I will order the other parts online.
This project is feasible and does apply to the course due to the various procedures mentioned

earlier.
This has been done before, and I will be following the instructions and using the 3D-Printer
schematics provided here: http://bit.ly/1EKznln. However, I will be developing my own code.

A3.3: I will be making sure the right calculations and values are done so that the proper resistors are
used and sensors & motors operate correctly.

B2.2: I will be updating a blog outlining my adventures in this endeavour.

B3.4: I will be troubleshooting my circuits in the Arduino when thing inevitably go wrong.

B5.2: I will be creating a programme to ensure that the intended process is carried out correctly.

B5.4: The programme will be run using various sensors and motors.
Timelines

Within the next week we plan on having all the necessary parts ordered.
Within the next 2 months we hope to have all the parts delivered and begin construction.
Within the next 2.5 months we hope to have the machine assembled and begin programming.
Within the next 3 months we hope to begin troubleshooting and fixing bugs.
Within the next 3.5 months we hope to have a working machine.
Budget/Resources

Connor will be paying for all the needed parts.

We will be ordering the necessary parts online.
We will keep the finished product.
The parts and their cost are listed here: http://bit.ly/1EKznln.
Connor will keep the finished project upon completion.

Measurement/Evaluation
We will know we have succeeded when candies in the funnel are put one-by-one through a colour
sensor, which sends information to the servomotor. The servomotor will then spin so that a trough is
facing the correct cup and the candies will be put into different cups depending on their colour.
Possible Challenges/Complications
Possible challenges that may arise include:

Not ordering all the parts we need.

Cannot find the right parts.
Parts do not fit.
Code doesnt work.
Parts dont communicate properly.
Parts arent delivered on time.
Issues with 3D printing design.
Responsibilities and Coordination
Ray will take the lead in Hardware (ie. Wiring Circuits) and Resources (ensuring we have the proper
materials and they are stored safely). Connor will take the lead in programming (making sure the
parts work correctly and communicate with the lead arduino device), Purchasing, and Blog
updates. Tommy will take the lead in design (preparing parts, 3D Printing parts) and Planning. We
will all help with each others responsibilities.
