Lesson plan for Senior Capstone-Number Stories

1. Get students to sit on floor and write an example problem on the


board.
I had 14 apples and now I have 8. How many apples did I give
away?
2. Ask students how we will figure this out? (Counter blocks, number line,
beans)
3. Have students come up to the board to help by calling on them to help
solve the problem.

4. Divide into groups and give them each a piece of paper with a number
story to work on.

Each group will sit at a table and work on the number story. Give
them 10 minutes to work on the problem
Have them show 2 ways how to solve it. (Drawing pictures, 10
chart, or tallies)

5. Invite them to come back to sit on rug and each group come up and
show the class their number stories.

Number Stories (both addition and subtraction)

1. I have 5 nickels and I need 13 to get a candy bar. How many


more nickels do I need to get the candy bar?
2. I have 17 books in my library and now I have 5. How many
books did people check out?
3. Abby has 8 oranges and I have 7 oranges, If we put our
oranges together how many do we have?
4. I have 11 quarters and I used 4 of them to buy a pack of gum.
How many quarters do I have left?
5. I have 6 pages in my story and Jason has 8. How many pages
do we have if we put them together?
