Last week, pupils

Deaf
Awareness
Week for the first
time.
The school was
actively
involved
in
a
range
of
fundraising activities
to support National
Deaf
Childrens
Society (NDCS) and
Hearing Dogs for
Deaf People. They
raised a total of
2050.32, which will
benefit the lives of

many deaf people

around the UK.
The
week
was
organised by eleven
deaf and hard of
hearing
students
who appealed to
Principal
Robert
Dewhurst to host
the
event.
Lead
student Madeleine
Rixon, who is in her
final year of GCSEs,
was determined to
make this year one
to remember.
Deaf Awareness
is
an
ongoing
problem with many
facing exclusion and
discrimination on an
almost daily basis.
I have personally
been a target of

deaf discrimination
and it is a horrible
experience, so by
educating people, I
hope that no other
deaf person would
have to go through
what I did. Thats why
Im so proud that I
have brought it to my
school, Madeleine
quoted.
Mr
Dewhurst
recognised
the
importance
of
educating
people
about hearing loss.
He said: We are a
fully inclusive College
and take pride in the
fact that we have
supported
Hearing
Impaired students to
fulfil their potential

and equip them with

the skills they need
for life.

Approximately
9
million people in the
UK have a hearing
loss, according to
NDCS. Deaf people
across the UK are
facing
exclusion
and discrimination
on an almost daily
basis. 80 per cent
of deaf children
are educated in a
mainstream school
it is really important
that their peers are
aware of the issues
that deaf children
can face.
The events that
were held during this
week were; Wear
it Loud day where
pupils wore their
brightest
clothing,
cake sales, visiting
speakers, sponsored
signathon, including
a visit from the NDCS
Listening Bus.

It is believed that

Flooding chaos
closes major road
Golf Links Road,
under Wymondham
Railway Bridge was
closed again this
week closed due to
flooding.
Two
weeks
of
rainfall
was
experienced in four
hours on Tuesday
and unfortunately
the
ageing
drainage
system
was
unable
to
cope.
A
black
Ford
Fiesta
became
caught in the flood
and
emergency
services were called
to rescue the driver.
The bridge was
closed for a further
48 hours until the
weather conditions
improved.
The
drainage
problem
under
the bridge is being

investigated
by
Anglian Water and
it is hoped that it
can be relieved by
creating run offs
to the River Tiffey.
However,
when
the river levels are
high it is feared this
will lead to more
localised flooding
into the fields which
are believed to be
owned by a farmer.
The Lord Mayor,
Damon Buckley is
pressing the council
to resolve the issue.
The Met Office
has issued an amber
warning for the
forthcoming days as
there is expected to
be unprescedented
levels of rainfall.
Residents
are
advised to avoid
the area and folllow
diversions.
