TUTORIAL PROBLEMS

KDOM (ME 316)

Problem 1
In artillery guns, the chemical energy of the propellant is converted into kinetic energy,
that both propels the projectile as well as gives rise to a recoil in the opposite direction.
The barrel from which the shell/projectile is fired is mounted on a recoil absorbing system
that can be approximated by a combination of springs and viscous dampers. A simplified
schematic illustration of such a gun of mass M mounted on a platform (such as a ship)
through a simple spring-damper system (of stiffness k and viscous damping coefficient c)
is shown below. The gun fires a projectile of mass m at an angle to the horizontal, and
at a muzzle velocity of v.

Considering the profile for the recoil force exerted on the gun starts from zero, attains
a maximum value of f0 after a time T /2 , and then returns to zero over a time T /2 . The
equation governing such a force can be written as,

F (t) = f0 1 cos

a) Assuming no damping, derive the expression for the response of the gun.
b) The forced transmitted to the platform.

The schematic diagram of a quarter car model is shown in the above figure. While
moving on a road, a step of height h, comes across the wheel.
a) Find the response x (t) of the mass M, due to the step excitation.

If the profile of the surface is sinusoidal, drive the following:

a) Frequency response function (FRF) between force transmitted to the body (M ) and
the road acceleration.
b) FRF between displacement of the mass (M ) and the road profile.
c) FRF between force exerted on the damper and the road acceleration.
