1961- King meets with John F. Kennedy and urges him to issue a second Emancipation Proclamation to
eliminate racial segregation
1962- During a prayer vigil he is arrested and spent two weeks in jail
1963- King makes his famous I Have A Dream speech in Washington D.C.
1964- MLK is named Man of the Year by Time Magazine
1964- King and other SCLC members join the movement in St. Augustine
1964- He is arrested and jailed in St. Augustine, Florida for demanding service at a white-only restaurant
1964- He won a nobel peace prize at a ceremony in Oslo, Norway
1966- MLK and his wife move into an apartment at South Harlem Avenue in Chicago to draw attention to
the citys poor housing conditions
1967- He delivers his Beyond Vietnam speech to a group of Clergy and Laymen in New York City
1968- King leads a march of 16,000 protesters to support the striking sanitation workers in Memphis

Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights leader who became
the face of the civil rights movement.
He was completely committed to his cause (or dream).
MLK strongly believed that ending segregation and freedom could be
achieved, most importantly he believed the key to this is nonviolence.
He led a social movement of equality that went against society,
although many hated him and made multiple attempts violently to
hurt him he still remained committed to his goal.
This leadership quality makes him an inspirational figure and
changed the way people thought, addressed, and responded to
equality.

a very strong leader.
He made multiple inspirational speeches that brought awareness and
concern for equality across America.
i.e. His speech I Have A Dream was broadcasted to millions of
Americans, including president Kennedy, and had an influential
impact nationally.

people know exactly what his beliefs
and
concerns were.

Martin Luther King Jr. walked the talk.
King didnt just talk about making a change, he made an effort to
include himself with the movement. He put himself out there and
worked with his followers and fellow leaders to constitute change.
He went to the nonviolent protests; worked with political leaders
to eliminate segregation laws; gave hundreds of speeches; and
even lived in a bad area to bring awareness to bad housing
conditions.
This quality showed people that he was focused and determined.
People will respect and follow a leader that do what they tell others to
do.

MLKs Impact Today


Every third Monday of January is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
We have this day to remember the impact of this great
leader on us today.
MLK fought for equality and justice, which changed societys
opinion and changed laws to rid segregation from the everyday
lives of people.
His commitment to peace and nonviolence represents a different way of
effectively solving problems in a respectable way.
Dr. King also shows us that just one person can make a big impact on the
world, he still inspires people today and lets us know that dreams can
come true.
